Oh, OK. It's from the Cape Town run, I just assumed it was Schwartz. Thanks!MajesticPhantom wrote:Operafantomet- Quick correction on your last post... that's Roxmouth in the MOTN photo.
PhantomDrums, i think there is one person here who has/had contact with Rafael the photographer. She pops in every so often, so I'm sure she'll see your request next time she's her. If she hasn't already!
Melly, that avatar of yours is fantastic! OK, I'm mighty addicted to the Aminta costume, but still. Someone has really understood the costume and the style there. Did you make it?
Re: Rare pictures 2
Yes, I've posted my other drawings in the creative corner if you want to see
(oh and I've sent you a mail this morning - a question about the flounced part of the dress, but I was on my iphone in the metropolitan... the page where you describe your costume was not fully charged... I've noticed then that my question was already answered after my mail was sent Sorry for the spam and thanks again! I admire you a lot, and receiving this kind of comment is a real pleasure )

Wasn't sure where to post this, but found this via Twitter.
Someone took a backstage tour in South Africa. An image from the stage looking out in to the auditorium:

Many pictures of Peter Jöback getting his head cast for specially made Phantom deformities:
http://www.peterjoback.com/blogg_swedish.php?postID=4132250039846786249
In his blog he tells about Christopher Tucker and his crew + studio, who they've worked with in the past, plus how he felt all covered up like that for two hours. Also, he met (=rehearsed with?) Sofia Escobar the other day, and Katy Treharne yesterday.

Oh, Tucker's wife is Finnish? Didn't know that. Peter comments how he sang the Finnish national anthem to her.

PhantomDrums wrote:Hello everyone,
This is my first post, I'm new to this list and so grateful to have found it. I'm a diehard Phan from the beginning who wishes the Net was around back in the day. How wonderful it would have been for such terrific, immediate contact between those who love the show as much as I do! Back in the early days it was all about snail mail so again, I'm very happy to be here.
I've read this entire thread and wanted to ask if anyone still had any contact with Rafael the photographer? He and I shared a lovely 15 year phone friendship that culminated in a visit from him about 7 years ago. We met over a weekend in NYC and then consequently, I lost touch. I know he was no longer doing photography or selling his photos, though he had a woman who handled much of his business for him regarding the Phantom snaps if memory serves correctly. Does anyone have any current info on him?
Thanks so much and I look forward to all that is to be learned here. Best wishes to all.
PhantomDrums
First, Welcome, I too wish the Net was back in the early days, oh the times and money that I spent on snail mail alone on Phantom of the opera sharing of videos, photos and articles.
I wish that I had current info on him or whom ever sells those blasted expensive Prints of Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman in London, I had wrote him in the early times of Phantom, he was a truly good person, and one day he actually called me, (At the time I had wanted to be a Professional photographer, rather than a Freelancer,)
Did you get to buy any of them, I had bought just three of them that was in a special priced set from showbiz showcase, around the time that Michael Crawford was in Los Angeles

For some reason this forum automatically locks threads of a certain length. I just wanted to give a heads up on there being an elder "Rare pictures" thread around too, from the early days of this forum:

I have some pictures I thought to share with everyone. A London elder brochure from 1993 with Peter Karrie, Jill Washington, and Simon Burke.

Oh wow, I love that PK mirror pic. I'd never seen it before. They did such a good job with those shots back in the early days--very atmospheric and eerie shots of the Phantom.

I agree....I love some of the newer programmes because of the larger, thicker brochures but they did capture the atmosphere and cast members so well back in the 80's and 90's!

Yes, I like as well the newer brochures, but the old ones have something special.
Not everytime the best photos or too little.
I think I have this brochure at home.

Re: Rare pictures 2
The MOTN pose pic is Martin Smith, I guess they thought because it had Jill Washington in it and because you can only see the mask side of the Phantom's face that they could get away with using that one instead of taking a new picture. I think they used that pic in the May '90 Karrie brochure too.

I also agree. Some of the early brochures are too dark for my taste, but when they have good pictures they're goooood. So atmospheric. I have the brochure, but thanks a lot for the scans, Devon!Devon wrote:SenorSwanky wrote:Oh wow, I love that PK mirror pic. I'd never seen it before. Just to clarify, the TOM picture in the second scan is alternate Debra Stables and not Jill Washington. The alternates has always been featured in the UK brochures, and usually in a Wishing dress shot or a TOM pose.
And isn't that Martin Smith in the MOTN pose? (ETA: London-Phan beat me to it)
Re: Rare pictures 2
Thinking about it, they used the Smith pic in the Willetts/Washington brochures too. I think it's strange that they used it in the brochure above yet in the Freeman/Washington brochure they used a new MOTN pic.

Ladies and gents, alternate Phantom Nicholas Nkuna from the South African production, currently playing in Johannesburg. Apparently he hasn't been on yet, so this is from a photoshoot:

The Aussie masks have never been favourites of mine. Too white and clumpy. Even elegant people like Anthony Warlow, Jonathan Roxmouth and Brad Little looks odd in them. But you can't really blame that on the actor.London-Phan wrote:Thanks for posting those I've been hoping some pics of him would show up soon. I'm really not a fan of that mask though.

No definitely not the actors fault. Look at Ethan Freeman, he looked great as the phantom in London and Toronto but not so good in Essen and that was down to the mask.

I'd never heard of Debra Stables before, nor obviously seen her.

I love those atmospheric shots from the older brochures.
Today I received the RAH brochure I ordered, and was surprised to find this picture of JOJ and Sofia Escobar hidden away at the back in an ad for the Royal Theatrical Fund:
I think it's much nicer than the one they've been using at Her Majesty's!

I should have put Debra Stables as alternate, my bad! Thanks for pointing out that was her in the TOM pic operafantomet. :-)

I agree, that is one of the nicest pictures ever taken of Rebecca Caine in the role. The picture was, according to herself, used in ads around Toronto city, though I don't know how large or small they were.
Here's some of Lori Zeglarski, Christine alternate in Hamburg:
God, I love the Hamburg costumes... Even her crazy tiara.

I've been on the hunt for pics of the ever elusive circular chandelier; I could've sworn there was a production or two that did not have the oval shape but rather a full circle, which I wish was used more often! What productions got the circular chandelier and were may one find pictures of it? Thanks!

There are some pictures of Kathy Krause in the dressing gown, etc. on her website and from what I gather, she played the role in Mexico? (the German's throwing me a bit) Does anyone have any information about her or a possible explanation for what looks like a US Hannibal bodice in a foreign production?

The only replica production with circular chandelier was the Vienna production, that was because the theater, Theater an der Wien, was a real opera house and there was multi-level "balconies" in the sides, don't know how to describe it better.

The Polish production had a circular chandelier aswell, it was a direct replica of the Palais Garnier chandelier, it looked awesome. The only good thing about that production..
I haven't seen any official pictures of it though.

Re: Rare pictures 2
I don't think she ever played Christine on stage, but she's done concerts with various Phantoms. I believe Dale Tracy is a personal friend of hers, and she's also sung opposite Colm Wilkinson. Though her costumes are fantastic, I'm 99% sure they are replica costumes. That's why you get a US styled slavegirl costume with a more European styled dressing gown. They are good replica, though.Viscountess wrote:http://www.wix.com/con3641/kathy-krause#!__home/gallery/albumphotos0=45

She writes she's the only Christine to have played the role in four different languages (English, German, Spanish and Hungarian), but fails to mention it was done in concert and not in legit productions. Note that she has pictures of Colby Thomas + another stage Christine in her site, for example the rooftop one:
Those are real stage pictures, and with Christine turning her face to the side so you can't tell who the actress is. But the ones where you can clearly see it's Kathy Krause is from photoshoots, backstage or concert. There are no indication of her actually being a legit stage Christine, other than ambiguous phrasing and picture posting.
Such a costume mix has happened on stage, though. When Rebecca Pitcher joined the World Tour some years ago, she brought along her US dressing gown, worn with an Aussie slavegirl bodice. Actually a nice combo. But I probably say that because I totally dislike the Aussie dressing gowns....
Brad Little and Rebecca Pitcher, World Tour.
Re: Rare pictures 2
Thank you for ALL of that! It all makes sense now. I knew there was something off when I saw that one picture with the entire Hannibal bodice, but I couldn't put my finger on it. Same with that Wedding Gown curtain call pic, I could have sworn I saw it with the Claudia Cote(?) bunch.operafantomet wrote:I don't think she ever played Christine on stage, but she's done concerts with various Phantoms.
