Oh, gotcha. I didn't know you were referring to the third pic when you said that. I don't know which brochure and Christine are which.operafantomet wrote:That's exactly what I said...SenorSwanky wrote:That third shot of Earl being kissed is actually different, so I think they shot the two of them kissing but for some reason decided to use the skirt from the previous photos.
"It also shows up in the June 2007 brochure, even more modified. The skirt and drapes are identical, but the torsos and heads are different."

Re: Rare pictures 2
In honour of the costume I'm currently making, here are some pictures from the Il Muto ballet:
The World Tour, don't know which stop.
Hamburg. I love this one, wish I had a version with clearer colours.
Also Hamburg.
Toronto.
Broadway.
Revived South Korean production AKA World Tour.
Original Copenhagen production. That extremely curved pointed foot the left has always fascinated me.
Recent West End.
Another World Tour picture; I think from the Aussie stops.
Royal Albert Hall concert.
Japan.

Re: Rare pictures 2
I agree; if there is one thing the RAH version did justice to was the showcase of the wonderful costumes in such vivid detail, esp. on bluray, I dont know how many times I paused the Hannibal scenes just to look at the wonderful work!

Re: Rare pictures 2
I know some of the leads got new costumes for the concert. But most of it came from the existing stock in England, Germany, Brazil and even the World Tour. So what they show is the average quality of Phantom costumes worldwide. And it's like they were meant for bluray closeups!StrangerThanUDreamt wrote:I agree; if there is one thing the RAH version did justice to was the showcase of the wonderful costumes in such vivid detail, esp. on bluray, I dont know how many times I paused the Hannibal scenes just to look at the wonderful work!
Many theatre costumes can be a sad sight close-up. The reason why Maria Bjørnson wanted the costumes so intricate and layered was that she meant it changed the attitude of the wearer. If they see all the details, feel the silk, hear the glass beads, they will "believe" the costume and add that into their attitude on stage. A side effect is that the Bjørnson costumes only get prettier the closer you see them. They really translated well in the RAH filming.

After watching the "making of" on the RAH bluray I noticed when they mentioned many of the costumes were borrowed from other companies; the craftsmanship is astounding, Im very glad Webber basically said (during the finale) that none of it wouldve been able to happen without Maria's wonderful vision; I also remember Hal talking about the curtains she designed being submerged in a special type of fragrance so that the audience can actually smell a perfume coming from the drapes! Pure brilliance! I've always been obsessed with Marias work (esp the sets for Phantom and the effect she uses of giving pieces here and there but letting your mind make up the rest). You're right about the costumes, it's as if they were made for bluray!

Heather McFadden, Christian Sebek, Kevin Ligon, Kyle Barisich, Michele McConnell, Aaron Galligan-Stierle and Cristin J. Hubbard. This photo was taken by Joan Marcus recently. I assume it's an outtake from the new brochure that is to come? I really can't wait to see it!
Now, if only they could make a new brochure for Las Vegas, with the closing cast. It's highly deserved, and long overdue.
Re: Rare pictures 2
My favourite Phantom sketch from Bjørnson's hand:
The design from 1986. Fantastically eerie!
And how it looks on stage (click to enlarge):
1. Florian Schneider, Switzerland, ca. 1995.
2. Henk Poort, Holland, ca. 1993.
3. Saulo Vasconcelos, Brazil, ca. 2005.
4. Hans Peter Janssen, Belgium, ca. 1999.
1. Thomas Schulze, Hamburg, ca. 1998.
2. Flemming Enevold, Denmark, 2009
3. Peter Jorde, Denmark, ca. 2000.
4. Brad Little, World Tour, ca. 2006.
Michael Crawford in West End, 1986. Notice the amount of skulls at the base of the cross. A nice nod to the graveyard scene in Leroux's novel. Also echoes his scull staff well.
Michael Crawford on Broadway, 1988.
Mikael Samuelson in Stockholm, ca. 1989.
Mikael Samuelson and Elisabeth Berg, Stockholm ca. 1989. It still bugs me that the set don't have the grave.
André Schwartz and Lana English, South Africa 2004.
Juan Navarro, Mexico, 1999/2000.
Unknown Phantom from Japan. Early US tour, Michael Crawford or Mark Jacoby.
André Schwartz, South Africa, 2011.
Ramin Karimloo, West End, 2007-08.

Re: Rare pictures 2
Anea, the one that you marked as 'unknown from Japan' was used for a very long time in 'tassled' format US programs and I believe it was labeled as being Michael Crawford in the US Tour or Los Angeles.
Always loved the Graveyard Scene Phantom shots, so thanks for that lovely recap!

Re: Rare pictures 2
You're right, checking my brochures now it's labeled "National Tour" (which, at the point, only applied to the US). But it doesn't say more than that. Be it Crawford or Jacoby, it's very early on, from the sit down productions. It looks a bit more like Crawford to my eyes, but it's too blurry to tell. I wonder if one of the later UK brochures, which used the generic design in the mid 90s, maybe tells. I remember one brochure being more specific about the pictures.
I must admit I though the face was too long and "bony" to be a Japanese Phantom... They always have these round faces.
Glad you enjoyed the pictures!

Re: Rare pictures 2
I have NO idea what this picture means, other than it seems to be Hugh Panaro reading the letter from Hal Prince at the 10,000 performance on Broadway. But I'm laughing SO hard!!

I believe it's Mark Jacoby as I have a brochure where it's labelled as him. Loving all of the Wandering child pics and I really love the costume design I'd never seen that one before.

THAT was right before Hugh read Hal's letter...right when he said he wished Gilly had done her whole speech wrapped around him and then tried to imitate the way she'd jumped him.
The audience loved it.
Re: Rare pictures 2
Great pics and funny...it must be great 10.000 performance on Broadway and so many actress/actors who was involved in the show.

Re: Rare pictures 2
Some new photos from South Africa. Mainly because Jonathan Roxmouth have officially replaced André Schwartz as the Phantom in Johannesburg, and all the Cape Town photos were of Schwartz. The new photos were taken by Suzy Bernstein. Click to enlarge.
Carlotta isn't that bad of a singer....? J/K, I think it's an awesome photo.
Roxmouth at the organ.
Jonathan Roxmouth with 1. Robin Botha and 2. Magdalene Minnaar.

Re: Rare pictures 2
Those shots from South Africa are lovely. I'm glad to see that Roxmouth is apparently doing well in the role (see the World Tour thread for info about his best actor theatre award nomination in the role). It can be a lot of pressure to have to replace a known performer like Andre, who has a prior association with the role in South Africa and he seems to have risen above that in fine style.
And that photo of Hugh from the 10,000th Broadway performance is hilarious!

As a follow-up to Anea's Graveyard Phantom post, I found a South African Phantom review that has a really great hi res photo of Jonathan Roxmouth with feathered hat and skull staff.
http://www.yoursoapbox.co.za/show/phantom-opera/ Click on the small thumbnail on the LEFT hand side of the page to get the super large version of the pic shown in the thumbnail on the right (makes sense, eh? lol).

I don't know what it is about Hugh, but he looks like the most fun loving guy in so many pictures....I think he's one of the top Phantoms I would love to meet!!
Re: Rare pictures 2
I think that is André Schwartz. I know it's from 2011, at least. It was taken by the photographer Pat Bromilow-Downing, and published on his site in November. But fantastic to see a large version without watermark! All his has a large watermark in the lower half:Madame Giry wrote:As a follow-up to Anea's Graveyard Phantom post, I found a South African Phantom review that has a really great hi res photo of Jonathan Roxmouth with feathered hat and skull staff.

Re: Rare pictures 2
Coming back to this question, I read a review of the movie "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" with Gary Oldman in the lead. Oldman was described as an intuitive actor, and the moment I read it I was like "yes!". He is an intuitive actor in the same way I feel Mia Karlsson was as Christine. If that makes sense.Porteña wrote:Just a question: what do you mean by Mia Karlsson's "intuitive Christine"? I would love to learn more about it!

Super-size "Sing for me!!" picture from 2011 South Africa, with Robin Botha and (I think) Jonathan Roxmouth:

Hello!
Hello everyone,
This is my first post, I'm new to this list and so grateful to have found it. I'm a diehard Phan from the beginning who wishes the Net was around back in the day. How wonderful it would have been for such terrific, immediate contact between those who love the show as much as I do! Back in the early days it was all about snail mail so again, I'm very happy to be here.
I've read this entire thread and wanted to ask if anyone still had any contact with Rafael the photographer? He and I shared a lovely 15 year phone friendship that culminated in a visit from him about 7 years ago. We met over a weekend in NYC and then consequently, I lost touch. I know he was no longer doing photography or selling his photos, though he had a woman who handled much of his business for him regarding the Phantom snaps if memory serves correctly. Does anyone have any current info on him?
Thanks so much and I look forward to all that is to be learned here. Best wishes to all.
