Re: Rare pictures 2
Intuitive is the best word I can think of. But not in a "seeing the future" way. Hard to explain... But she seemed to respond to every line and every word differently for each performance. She also seemed to read her co-players well, knowing their movements and reactions before they happened - which was interesting, seeing how there were always variations. I don't know if that makes sense.Porteña wrote:Just a question: what do you mean by Mia Karlsson's "intuitive Christine"? I would love to learn more about it!
I'll try to make a Peter Karrie collage soon. Just have to sort out pictures of him from the various productions.

Re: Rare pictures 2
That's definitely JOJ with Dutcher, and I think Barrett with Loyacano, but who can tell unless you were there? Love the MC/SB pic. Hadn't seen it before. I generally love this scene. Some of my favorite music and staging in the entire show.

Anyone good at recognizing Japanese Christines? If so... help!
Problem with the Japanese Christines is that there's always 3-5 sharing the role, and it's never labeled who's who in the brochures. This unlike for example South Korea, where there's one principal and one alternate (which naturally means one is a lot more featured than the other), and they always write the name of the actor under the picture. Much easier...

More mirror:
Top left: Mikael Samuelson and Elisabeth Berg, Stockholm. Bottom left: Thomas Borchert and Anne Görner, Essen.
Middle: Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman(?), Broadway.
Top right: Anthony Crivello and Sierra Boggess, Vegas. Bottom right: Peter Jorde and Hanne Damm(?), Copenhagen.
I've always been a fan of the Vegas trick, but seeing these pictures made me realize they miss out on the brick corridor illusion behind the Phantom. It doesn't always show well live, but it looks so cool in photos. Still dig the Vegas trick, though, I just realized that each way of doing it has its benefits.

Glad you like the collages, Devon!
Here's two pictures I hadn't seen before, of performers I like very much:
Elusive Renée Knapp in Elissa costume.
Peter Jorde in deformity makeup.

The photographer Logan Riehl has taken a whole b/w photo series of West End performers in their dressing room. A Phantom one was bound to show up, right? Here's Leila Benn Harris in that wonderful blue dress... Albeit b/w.

I had a go at making some colages. Sorry that they are a bit small. If you want to see the full pictures (some are cut up) and bigger, then I'll stick them up:

thephantomfullerton, thanks for those collages. If you want to display the pictures so people get a preview, you can tick the little box under the picture at Photobucket. When you've ticked the ones you want to share, go to the bottom of the page and click "choose action". Choose "generate link codes for selected". This will give you a set of links to use in web sites and forums. The best for forums is:
IMG for bulletin boards & forums - Clickable thumbnails.
Copy from there, paste in here, and it'll look like this:
(which is a cool mirror scene image from the original South African production, with Lana English and André Schwartz. I just found a set of pictures from the one who took the original pictures, and which has just taken the ones of the new South African production. They aren't out yet, though. More here: http://www.pbdphoto.co.za/?p=484 )

Here's quite a few rare backstage and rehearsal shots from the Manchester production/UK tour, with Mark McKerracher and Nikki Ankara/Nicky Adams. The pictures were taken by Raoul understudy Richard Burman. Enjoy!

Nice. I wonder who the Phantom is behind him when he's dressed up as Raoul for the auction. Whoever it is is too young and skinny to be McKerracher.

Re: Rare pictures 2
That is SO history repeating itself... I have about the same picture of previous South African Christine Lana English, in the same pose, in the same costume, also tiiiiiny. I think it even was from the same paper. Haha! But comparing those pictures... WTF has happened with the Elissa skirt? It looks a lot smaller, and that backdrape is greeeeen.... It doesn't match the dusty golden tones of the skirt at all.PhantomsGhost wrote:I apologize this is so small It was in today's South African "The Herald" print edition The online edition has the article but not the photo. Robin Botha as Christine:
Speaking of the South African production, they have the opening night tonight. The other current Christine - Magdalene Minnaar - was interviewed by Afrikaans News 24. A cool WYWSHA picture was included there:
The bodice looks like it's been taken out for another wearer, and then taken in again for her. Cause the placement of the appliqués is a bit random. At first I thought it was the one Ana Marina wore, the one with a big faux vest, but it doesn't match. But an even more interesting detail rarely seen is that you can see the strap going under the arms and towards the back, where it is buckled up. This is to keep the cloak in place. The Rooftop cloak and the Phantom's cloak usually have this as well. Not in all productions and in every cloak, but in general. It is to avoid the cloak straining in the neck and affecting the singing. And of course to make the costume sit nicer.
thephantomfullerton, thank you so much for these Claire Louise Hammacott pictures. Seeing full-shots of the late 90s/early2000s UK costumes is actually rare. Love the Masquerade one!
Re: Rare pictures 2
I somehow knew you'd like the masquerade one! I personally like the ones of her with Scott Davies. I 'll look if I saved any others, but it was a while backoperafantomet wrote:

Someone asked for Peter Karrie collages. Here's three, with pictures from Canada (I.E. some are from the Hong Kong stop, but with the Canadian cast, sets and costumes). Sorry if I've mislabeled some of them, but I THINK they're all him. Christine is for the most Sylvia Rhyne, though I think the tender MOTN one in the middle is Glenda Balkan.

Re: Rare pictures 2
And a pointless Christine-and-Carlotta-in-Hannibal-costumes, while I'm at it. Just so rare to see them side by side in those costumes. Come to think of it, I've never seen a photo of both Christine and Carlotta in the grand Elissa skirt. Someone should totally take such a picture!
1. Elizabeth Welch and Liz McCartney, Broadway.
2. Kimilee Bryant and Marie Danvers, US Tour.
3. Katy Treharne and Melanie Gowie, West End.
4. Colby Thomas, Vera Borisova and Marcello Ronchietto, Hamburg. One big happy family!

Re: Rare pictures 2
Can you tell I'm bored?
Someone asked at the unofficial POTO board which Phantom version influenced the ALW one the most. My reply was that Maria Bjørnson drew heavily on the Lon Chaney movie (as well as old opera costumes, Harper's Bazar fashion plates etc), while ALW himself probably was closer to the original novel. Both influenced the 1986 version a lot. And I put together this quick collage to show some inspirational moments/costumes/scenes/ideas.

Re: Rare pictures 2
There's no question. The Chaney version also influenced MC and Gillian Lynne in how they created the Phantom's movements and the other characters' choreography.
Re: Rare pictures 2

Get ready to GORGE in large, glossy, fantastic pictures from the new South African production. They're all taken by photographer Pat Bromilow-Downing, who I previously linked to for the 2004 pictures. Here's the new ones. *FAINTS*
