Re: POTO stuff on eBay
I have a feeling that anyone who really wants this will not be scared off like that. I just know that I have to set a limit and stick to it.

Re: POTO stuff on eBay
When it proxy bids for you, why not? I always bid the highest I will go. Rarely do I bid again if I'm outbid.
Re: POTO stuff on eBay
I still haven't decided my absolute max yet. The auction ends a few days before I get paid, so that's affecting my limit. We'll see....

I talked with the seller on the phone. He said that there has been more interest than he thought there would be for this piece. A bunch of people have tried to get him to close the auction early (Boo!) to avoid having to pay more. Which I totally understand....I would do the same thing. He runs a lot of risk closing it early, though. He did explain the paypal/cash thing. Last year, he sold an item and the buyer requested local pick up. The buyer paid through paypal, and picked up the item in person. Later that day, however, the buyer filed a claim with paypal saying he hadn't received the item. The seller told paypal it was a local pick up. Paypal said that without a valid tracking number, there was no way to prove that the item had been delivered. The seller had to refund the money and never got the item back.
He did say he was going to get the specs for me on saturday--dimensions, weight, etc....I'm going through my finances right now to see how much I can devote to the cause.
I. Must. Know.
How did he get such a piece?

He's actually selling it for someone else. I've inquired about how the owner came by the piece, but he hasn't gotten back to me on that yet.

Just need to prepare my myself mentally for the possibility that there MIGHT actually be someone out there who's crazier than I am. Less of a let down that way.

Less than 21 hours to go....I did find out there is at least one other person who's been asking the serious questions like I have. Hopefully they will chicken out....

CONGRATS! Please take lots of pics when you get it!
By the way, is this the original Broadway organ used by MC, or a later one or...do we know? I know the auction page says "the original piece", but I wasn't quite sure what that meant.

Re: POTO stuff on eBay
I don't think anything has been confirmed on that (unless Phantomfett has gotten more info). My guess is that it's from one of the US tours, somehow that seems more likely. The seller write "original organ from the Broadway play", but that can might as well mean that it is an original (=authentic) piece from the musical - many Americans use the term "Broadway" as synonymous with the musical genre rather than as a location.Scorp wrote:CONGRATS! So awesome and glad that one of the members here won it! Woo hoo, way to go! Can't WAIT to see some pics... ;-)
And operafantomet is right, I mean it might be the original but I'm guessing since the seller stated it was the organ from the Broadway play, that means they probably got it at the flea market in New York and that it was used on stage there. Most of the time using the term Broadway to me means Broadway in New York but not all think that way. Nonetheless, that is way cool and a great Ebay win!!

I'll see what I can dig up on it. There may be some indications inside or underneath it. Won't know for a bit. I can't wait to inspect it to see if the wiring and batteries still work. It would be really awesome to charge it up, light her up, and put a male mannequin in the sitting position wearing Phantom suit on it. Now, my next task is to find the quill, ink jar, and music that go on it. And the removable candle....
The seller said that the actual owner picked up the piece as part of a bulk auction lot of Broadway items. Among them were the motorcycle from the Producers, and a huge poster used in Miss Saigon. There were some other Phantom items, but the owner sold them off a while ago.

Man. That sounds like a heck of an auction lot! I wonder what other Phantom items he had. Still, that's pretty awesome that you have assurances that the organ is really from Broadway. Did the seller say exactly when the owner bought the auction lot?
Again, amazing that you were able to get the organ - and your display idea sounds fantastic!

Re: POTO stuff on eBay
He did not say exactly when it was acquired, but I'd like to know if there was a transfer of paperwork when it did happen. It would be nice to have the legal paper trail, you know?

Re: POTO stuff on eBay
Oh absolutely. Provenance is key in these kinds of things. However, I have no doubt that it was legitimately acquired. I would think that we'd have heard about it if a bunch of high profile and large-scale props from major Broadway shows disappeared inexplicably.
I've got to say, I'm so glad that one of our board members won the organ. It would be a real shame if it went into some rich person's private collection, where it would never be seen again.
