Good god. That's a two-week paycheck.phantomfett wrote:EarlFan wrote:Definitely out of my price range too Wow, yesterday the highest bid was on £70 and now it's gone up to £310.00. I wonder what the reserve is.
600 pounds, according to the response I got from the seller.

Welcome to the club!
Re: POTO stuff on eBay
I wonder if it's within anyone's price range. I wouldn't even spend that much on Michael Crawford's mask, let alone Dave Willetts'.
Re: POTO stuff on eBay
The reserve was not met when the auction ended. I'm guessing it will be:
1. relisted
or
2. sold in private to a collector who bids just enough money (but lower than the eBay reserve)

And to make it worse, its one of Dave's masks from when he was in London, you cant really tell from those pics, but his london masks were terrible looking (anyone saw them in the video from the theatre museum about phantom makeup) they just looked so strange on him, the area of the mask that goes up on the right side by the temple just corves too drastically towards the forehead and makes the whole think look lop-sided. However his Manchester masks were much better.
Re: POTO stuff on eBay
Well, if I had it, I'd consider spending it on Crawford's mask or Peter Karrie's or Colm Wilkinson's, but probably not Willetts'. Good Phantom, but not one of the absolute greats, in my book. The thing, however, that does make this a real collectors' item is that it's from 1988, the first mask made for any Phantom other than Crawford. It's an early look at how the designs changed from Phantom to Phantom more than they do now, since they molded the actors' faces and made unique sculptures for each. You can already see how drastically different this mask is from Crawford's, and how close it is to the design used today.Scorp wrote:I wonder if it's within anyone's price range. Re: POTO stuff on eBay
If I were loaded with money, I would definitely buy it... Hehehe. But I agree with you others - it's an amazing item as such, but for that minimum price I would expect it to have belonged to one of the "great" ones. That said, a real stage mask, especially from early Phantom days, is kinda invaluable in itself.

Set of 3 Phantom of the Opera Music Boxes (Mask, Phantom on Throne, & Angel)
Phantom and Christine Wedding Figurine
... and, a weird one, but bear with me, there might be some interesting stuff inside:

Sadly Paul's voice is just about shot. Could be a somewhat temporary thing, but it's gotten weaker and weaker in the last decade. I just saw him and the rest of KISS in concert about a month ago, and he did minimal singing--just the lead parts he has to do, no backup vocals--because his voice was raspy as hell. Sad. He doesn't have the vocal stamina anymore to do concerts night after night because he's stretched and abused his cords in ways they just shouldn't be over the years. Once, he actually had a nice and very flexible rock voice.

Sorta how I feel about Bon Jovi. But then again, that was a man who f^cked his voice over due to smoking. I almost don't want him to sing Livin' on a Prayer anymore. It ruins the memories.
And, Paul... his Phantom was one interesting interpretation. That's all I can really come up with.
Got some new ebay finds to add:
Timothy Nolan Press Photo
Timothy Nolan Press Photo 2
1986 Phantom Press Photo 1 (Little Lotte)
1986 Phantom Press Photo 2 (Wishing)
1986 Phantom Press Photo 3 (Masquerade)
1986 Press Photo 4 (Twisted Every Way)
1986 Phantom Press Photo 5 (Il Muto)
These are really nice, and for a good price too. I'm tempted to get them all, lol.

Re: POTO stuff on eBay
Oh, man. Those two Tim Nolen photos were nifty. This is what I get for not trolling eBay for Phantom goodies very often anymore.
Anyhow, some amusing items from ebay Phantom searching:
Phantom of the Opera Nitric Acid - Um. Wow...
Alleged Mirror Bride Glove Prop - Not really sure about this one. I mean, look at the photo that's included; the Mirror Bride isn't wearing a glove! Maybe Madame Firmin's glove? Hm!

Not a very good reference picture to include in their auction for the glove. lol
There's another picture I've seen, I think on Anea's site but don't have time to look that is of Dodie Pettit as the Mirror Bride and she has gloves on.

Re: POTO stuff on eBay
You must've edited those eBay links into your post, ML6, because I hadn't seen them until now. I'd only seen one or two grainy b&w pic of Nolen previously, and he was indistinguishable from MC. Very cool. The rarest of rare pics.
Re: POTO stuff on eBay
It's possible that's the real thing, I *think* I saw them selling a pair of gloves at Broadway Cares along with the Mirror Bride masks and all those photos that have been popping up recently.MasqPhan wrote:Not a very good reference picture to include in their auction for the glove. lol

Yeah, I edited them in. I didn't want to look spammy with two posts back to back in the same day.

A bit absurd to use a picture of a West End mirror bride without gloves when you're trying to sell a Broadway mirror bride glove... Haha.Madame Giry wrote:

I actually sold those to that person... They were labeled "Mirror Bride gloves." Beyond that I have no idea.

Re: POTO stuff on eBay
Nice Bradley Parrish "Act I" framed print on eBay. The shipping quote is way out of line but the seller says he'll refund if the shipping quote turns out to be too much. I should think it will be too much. As I recall shipping for mine (I also have this print all framed up) was more like $25-$30.

Didn't want to take credit where credit's not due. It's not mine, although some parts are quite like. I doubt I've ever made anything worth $4,000. It's a really nice replica, though. Seems really well put together. I'm impressed.

So didn't know that a Red Death mask existed (and not a movie replica).

Oh, I know those. They're produced by Masque Arrayed, who also makes the leather and plastic Phantom half-masks you sometimes find for sale at the official productions.ML6 wrote:So didn't know that a Red Death mask existed (and not a movie replica).

Re: POTO stuff on eBay
I was very naughty yesterday and went on a eBay splurge. One of the items I got impressively arrived today:
It's a magazine from a newspaper dated 5 October 1986 -- came out on the Sunday preceding the Thursday opening night of the London production. No new pictures, they're the same publicity shots as the ones featured in George Perry's book, but an interesting article, which begins with Hal Prince and his assistant experiencing problems with the infamous "f***ing rats". Interestingly, Hal Prince takes credit for the half mask idea; I thought previously the idea had come from Maria Bjørnson.
Nice to have this piece of history. Some of the adverts within it are hilarious for how retro they are, especially the ones talking about the technological marvels of those old BBC computers...

Re: POTO stuff on eBay
I noticed he said the same in one of those early Broadway features I posted in the YouTube clips. I've heard both versions several places. I've even heard Crawford being credited for it. So I really don't know what to think. Maybe Hal Prince suggested half of the face needed to be visible because he heard how much Crawford struggled with the traditional options, and then Bjørnson sat down and designed that epic mask. A sort of collaboration work, which in the end is hard to take credit for. I dunno.Scorp wrote:Interestingly, Hal Prince takes credit for the half mask idea; I thought previously the idea had come from Maria Bjørnson.
That cover is quite fantastic!!
