Re: YouTube clips
OK, that's unreal. Wow. There's falsetto, and there's a completely different voice type. I mean, I can hit some of those notes, but I don't sound like a soprano. It's still huskier. Amazing.

Phantom - the one man show!
But aaaaagh, how annoying. YouTube is forcing me to make a Google account if I wanna continue using my YouTube account. They've had it as an option for a year, but now it's not optional anymore. Just freaking annoying. I know they do it to prevent spamming (or so they say), but I think that if someone has been members for years and years, that should be a guarantee against spamming...

Re: YouTube clips
I debated posting this, but it is a soundboard recording, not a boot, and it's posted by Jeff Keller himself, just like the Maria Kesselman recordings, which I believe were allowed to be posted here some time back. Anyway, here's Keller with Brightman performing the title song:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KtZpomwWTaE
It includes some awesome never-before-seen shots of Keller in the role with other cast members from 1988 to the early '90s.

Re: YouTube clips
This has probably been asked a thousand times already - but apart from the few clips shown during the BBC 'Behind The Mask' documentary,is there any other footage/interviews with Maria Bjornson? It's something I'd love to see.

Re: YouTube clips
There is a nice segment in the Viennese documentary. Alas she is dubbed in German, over her English, so I can't make out too much of what she's saying. It's not a long clip, but she's placed next to a stage model and talks about the design. I only have a bad VHS copy, so alas there's no way for me to get it online. Very odd the whole thing hasn't shown up on YouTube or similar, there's lots of great clips of the Viennese production in it.justin1976 wrote:This has probably been asked a thousand times already - but apart from the few clips shown during the BBC 'Behind The Mask' documentary,is there any other footage/interviews with Maria Bjornson? Oh wow, that's fantastic! Great job, MasqPhan! And it's great to see a recent clip of Peter, as well.

Haha, I don't think she wanted everyone discovering those, but yes, she was amazing. And Peter still sounds awesome as well.

Holy shit, you nailed the cadenza! Woah, lady, woah!
Where has she been hiding, indeed?!

Erm.... wow. This is how it should be done. Michael Crawford singing MOTN, in costume, live, from 1989.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPiUhXMorYM
His body language is spectacular! And the money notes are definitely there...

How it should be done indeed! It never ceases to amaze me how effortlessly graceful and commanding his Phantom is. He barely even touches Christine, yet there's more pure sensuality in these four minutes than in all the movie's touchy-feely crap. And oh dear Lord, that final note...gorgeous.

Re: YouTube clips
I adore that particular performance of Michael. I was around 11 when that first aired on TV and it was my first exposure to Phantom. I'd never even seen any live theatre of any sort before and so I was mesmerized by what I saw on TV that night. The dream began there that I wanted to be the "girl in the white dress". Who'd have thought it would actually happen(although without the 'white dress')?
I agree with your comment LadyCDaae. He barely touches her but the scene is overflowing with sensuality and emotion. Don't need all the touchy-feely stuff to accomplish that.
And then there's that voice of Michael's....sigh. Nuff said.

Re: YouTube clips
Pretty obviously lip-synched, using I believe the same track as in the Bob Hope appearance, but it is a masterful physical peformance.

Found this today, B-roll footage from the Broadway production with the original cast.

I have allways loved the way that Sarah sings and performs with such joy.
Michael singing Music of the Night still sends chills up and down my spine

right now, so far I can only dub vhs to vhs (NTSC) format, this week though, I found a local well to me local in Cleveland ohio that transferres VHS to DVD, I am trying this out, (It's actually cheap for the dub, I will let you know, how that turns out.) supposedly they claim to only be able to put one hour on a DVD, Although, I did call around and other transfer places say that is about right.) if it turns out good, I will report it. then the only thing is for you European nations, most of you have PAL format rather than NTSC) but usually a lot more places dub from NTSC to PAL and back no issue,
I actually do like sharing.. reminds me in the early days where, for instance, instead of the internet and emailing, did things the long route,
P.S. I can make xerox copies black and white and Color of my articles and pics, if anyone wants just pm me with your address and I can send a list of what I have, like I said I have tons.

Re: YouTube clips
You're very generous, Ladygodiva! I might take you up on that offer.
So the Oliviers Awards is held right now in the UK. John Owen Jones and Sierra Boggess performed the title song, IN costume, with candelabras and all, from what I read. There were also a video segment with old and new stage clips, as well as movie clips. I expect it to appear on YouTube pretty soon... Most say the title song with JOJ/Boggess was epic, and I'm dying to hear/see it.

From the Broadway Phantom Facebook page: "Marking 25 Phantastic years of The Phantom of the Opera, current Phantom John Owen Jones will be performing as part of this year's Olivier Awards this Sunday! While it can't be watched live in the U.S. (by streaming or otherwise), we WILL be posting video here on this page as soon as it's available to us!"

The segment was mainly OLC archive stuff, with talking heads in-between from the Behind the Mask documentary. Nice homage for the 25th year, but nothing we haven't seen before.
The performance was good; full costumes, candelabras and boat. Plus it was sung completely live, which makes a nice change when hearing the title song! JOJ gave (as always) a delightfully candid interview afterwards, where they were trying to get him to take off the mask but said he legally couldn't, so he just gave a sneaky peek

JOJ is always hilariously cheeky in interviews. I heard Sierra was miming the whole thing. Think JOJ was live. Anyone know for sure?
Re: YouTube clips
JOJ was definitely live; I'm pretty sure Sierra was miming at least the cadenza. Oh well. Anyway, it's popped up on Youtube, so you can judge for yourself: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2Aysczt1QA
I must say, as much as I love the title song, it really doesn't quite work out of context, ie. outside of the Bjornson staging - perhaps it would have been better to do MOTN/AIAOY/WYWSHA. But I really enjoyed the performance anyway.

Re: YouTube clips
It looks pretty legit, apart from the last notes, maybe. Yeah JOJ was definitely singing live. They made quite a good couple I thought!
After re-watching, I'd say all of it was live.

Re: YouTube clips
Well, the cadenza was suspect. And you could kind of tell JOJ was singing live as he was flat on "always" in the fourth verse. I can forgive him for that, though, as he's such a fantastic performer.
