Thanks for posting, Raphael!
Is it just me or is that a really strange Elissa skirt configuration going on there? Anea! We need your expertise!

"So I told that b#tch, 'You lost it, you jump into the g#dd@mn sea and get it yourself!' Oh, wait..."
That's why I thought Fraser's Raoul didn't work. Boggess acted her role her way - sensitive and jolly, he acted his role his way - aggressive and shouty - but there were little interaction between those two. They didn't REact to eachothers emotions. ...but your comment is gold! You know you're in trouble when you're freaking out the woman who's used to chatting with a disembodied voice on a regular basis.
You're thinking of those giant... UFOs? It's just the brooches on the apron growing out of proportions, methinks. It looks similar to the one Wendy Ferguson wore in the concert - the last picture underneath is the picture they used for her insert. The first picture shows Judith Gardner Jones from West End 2003, with smaller brooches and also a more subdued colour scheme. (that's one of my favourite Carlotta Elissa skirts ever. That, and the Danish one, and the Vegas ones. They are unbeatable. Period. )https://2img.net/h/i535.photobucket.com/albums/ee353/maskedmaestro/duffy25.jpg

Thanks a bunch for scanning and posting the Duffy picture, Raphael!

This this this this this this this! That was exactly the problem with the RAH trio--Sierra had all this charm and personality, Fraser had none and Ramin, well, he tried, but I didn't get any sense that they were playing off of each other at all. They could have been going through three separate shows for all the connection there was between their characters. A few days afterwards, I watched some (cough) footage of Gary Mauer and Beth Southard, who have some of the best Phantom-Christine chemistry I've ever seen, and it was like an entirely different musical--you could feel their passion and tensions clashing against each other.

Any pictures of John Barrowman as Raoul? I've only seen a couple very small pictures where you can't really distinguish who the actor is anyway. Not sure if any good ones do exist...

Now, who's up for a little game? The famous" "who is this" game! From the 25th anniversary concert, where many former Christines participated:
The ones I can identify are:
Robyn North in b/w "fur" costume in front.
Tabitha Webb in "bonbon" costume in front.
Rachel Barrell in "Gaulouise" in second line, left.
Sarah Ryan (right?) behind Barrell, in black Victorian dress.
Deborah Dutcher behind Barrell, in tan Victorian dress.
Amanda Jane Callaghan (right?) standing on Barrell's right side, in a "wild mix" costume. I actually thought it was Nicky Adams but apparently AJ Callaghan was in one of those pictures so I'd say you are right
Katie Hall in the same b/w "fur" costume as Robyn North.
Sofia Escobar in the back, in "Il Muto maid" costume.
ETA: Sorry don't know what went wrong there. Woops!

Oh wow, some really pretty photos in those posts, Anea!
The mirror bride shot is by far the CREEPIEST. Just looking at her looking down at them with 'human like arms' is so... ugh, CREEPY.
On top of that, that one shot with Raoul kissing Christine's hand. *swoon*

Very glad you liked them! And Mirror Bride would be happy to hear that. She took great pride in being creepy as hell and varying her act for every performance.ML6 wrote:Oh wow, some really pretty photos in those posts, Anea!

Finally, as promised, pics of John Barrowman as Raoul. Though I must say that exact brochure was SPARSE when it came to Raoul pictures! Only three of Raoul, and they were all dark. So don't hold your breath... I've included more pictures from the December 1991 brochure, featuring Peter Polycarpou, Shona Lindsay/Lisa Hull, John Barrowman, Paula Goss, Ethan Freeman and Michael Bauer.
1. and 2. John Barrowman as Raoul.
3. Peter Polycarpou as the Phantom.
1. Ethan Freeman as André, Paula Goss as Carlotta
2. Masquerade cast. It's from a 3-split page, hence the white lines.
3. Ethan Freeman (André), Paula Goss (Carlotta), John Barrowman (Raoul), Michael Bauer (Firmin) and Ramon Remedios (Piangi)
Also, this might or might not be John Barrowman as Raoul. Personally I think it's Mario Frangoulis, but they look quite a bit alike in costume, and they were both Raoul in 1991 (which the underneath picture is from). So your guess is as good as mine. Others in the photo:
Julia Goss (Carlotta), Ramon Remedios (Piangi), Dave Willetts (Phantom), Jill Washington (Christine), Sally Smith (Madame Giry), Ethan Freeman (André), Michael Bauer (Firmin) and Kimberley Patridge (Meg Giry). I also recognize Phillip Griffith as Reyer (I think?) and Janos Kurucz as Buquet (I think?).

I have some Peter Karrie pics for you, couldn't find any specifically for Vancouver though. In mask of course! Couldn't find anything with Carl Sanderson. Hope you enjoy! Sorry if some of the pictures aren't the greatest quality, some of them were hard to scan and my scanner needs a cleaning!

Wow, those pictures are awsome! But does anyone have any Peter Karrie Vancouver pictures or a brochure that they could scan pictures from? It would be very well appreciated. Also, are the Vancouver Peter Karrie masks similar to the Peter Karrie Toronto masks? I suppose that they could all just be the same mask. Any thoughts?

Same mask, I'm pretty sure. Unless they made another from the same mold. Also, please limit how much you quote pictures so the page takes less time to load.
Re: Rare pictures 2
No, no, those John Barrowman pictures are lovely! Believe me, that's a lot more of him as Raoul than I've ever seen before. It's so strange seeing him as Raoul and thinking that he actually played in Phantom. Love it! Thank you. I also love all of the other pictures accompanying the Barrowman ones. Didn't realize Ethan Freeman played Andre.

Re: Rare pictures 2
Shit, Ethan Freeman was a manager at one point? Damn, wow, wish there was something out there to show what he sounded like. That's some good casting. From the roles he has played in his other musicals, he always has that interesting voice of authority. And he's also a pretty funny guy, too! (But I'm talking about when he sings in German.)

Re: Rare pictures 2
Yeah, he played Andre and understudied the Phantom before being made principal. There are examples of what he sounded like, but we can't talk about them here.
Re: Rare pictures 2
That brings me to another English/German languaged Phantom/manager: Ian Jon Bourg
He played the Phantom in Hamburg, Stuttgart and Essen, and André in the US tour. I think he also understudied the Phantom in the US tour. He's now u/s Phantom in the Las Vegas production, though credited as "flunky/stagehand".
If I remember correctly, he was also u/s in Hamburg and principal in Stuttgart. He was one of many alternating Phantoms in Essen, doing a month or three each. I was lucky to catch him there, as the guy before him had injured his ankle and IJB started his run a bit earlier.

Re: Rare pictures 2
Ian has been my favorite Phantom since 1997. He was on in place of Rick Hilsabeck. I was lucky enough to see him as the Phantom twice during that run in Denver. I didn't know if I'd ever get to see him again as the Phantom. I got to meet him backstage too. Super nice guy! That was actually the first time I got to see Red Death backstage. The cool thing about it was that years later when visiting DC Anderson in Denver, he was in the same room I had met Ian in.
Fast forward to December of 2008. Phantom on a Budget and I already had tickets to two performances in Vegas. Having purchased the tickets several months out, we didn't know who the Phantom was going to be. Brianne informed us that Ian was on for those two shows as the Phantom. And....to make it even more special, Sarah Lawrence was making her Vegas debut in those two shows!!!! Lots of win all around! So we saw my favorite Phantom and one of my favorite Christines together two nights in a row! Sarah is tied for first with Susan Owen in my book, who I also saw opposite Ian in 1997.
Ian's presence is amazing on stage, and his voice is very powerful and commanding. It would take a LOT to dethrone him as my favorite Phantom.

I didn't think he was Phantom understudy while he was Andre. Is that definite? I'm not saying you're wrong, it's just I always thought the understudy was Scott Davies during Freemans run as Andre. Although I guess it would make sense for it to be Freeman as he had played the Phantom before.

Then, my dear, get ready for some Ian Jon Bourg splendor! All from Stuttgart and with Janine Kitzen as Christine. She is one of the prettiest Christines I know of. She and IJB made a fine stage couple!phantomfett wrote:Ian has been my favorite Phantom since 1997. He was on in place of Rick Hilsabeck. Re: Rare pictures 2
I'm not sure Freeman understudied the Phantom while he was Andre, no, but I believe he was Andre in the West End as early as 1993, or maybe even sooner. And he was principal by 1995, if not 1994, when Jill Washington was Christine. Was Davies associated with the show that early? And had Freeman already been the Phantom in Vienna or elsewhere? I know he hadn't in Toronto yet. That was in 1997/1998ish, I believe.
Re: Rare pictures 2
If I remember correctly, he was the original Phantom alternate in Vienna. If my memory isn't tricking me... That production opened in 1988, and closed in 1993.SenorSwanky wrote:I'm not sure Freeman understudied the Phantom while he was Andre, no, but I believe he was Andre in the West End as early as 1993, or maybe even sooner. He went on as André in the West End from ca. August 1991 to the summer of 1992. And he was cast as the principal Phantom in January 1994, and stayed until ca. the summer of 1995. It should also be noted that he was hired to replace Graham Bickley in the 1993 studio cast recording with Claire Moore. That must have been 1993 as well.
He continued to Toronto, where he was the principal Phantom in 1997 (maybe earlier and/or later as well, the brochure I have with him is from 1997). And he repeated the role in Essen in 2006 again. According to a web site "He did the lead role in "The Phantom of the Opera" more than 1000 times in Vienna, London and Toronto", and that is not counting his Essen run. Which, by the way, was a huge disappointment. I don't know what changed, but he just wasn't good. And that is sad considering how awesome he was in London and Toronto. But when you slap a butt ugly mask like this on someone's face....
....you can't really blame him for being lackluster on stage... More pics of Freeman as the Phantom:
1. Freeman in Vienna (1988? Before 1991, at least)
2. Freeman in Toronto (1997)
3. Freeman in Toronto, with Sylvia Rhyne as Christine (1997)
4. Ethan Freeman in Essen, With Anne Görner as Christine (2006)

You even liked that large Ethan Freeman one? No seriously though, very glad you liked them. It's no fun to post pictures if no-one takes an interest in them.Devon wrote:All these Phantom pictures are making me DROOL! They are wonderful, thank you Anea!!

Alas the autographed ones aren't mine, they're just scans I've found online. The German productions always did such postcards with logo and the person in costume, to give away at the stagedoor. Even understudies had them. But when I stagedoored in Essen Ian Jon Bourgh hadn't gotten his yet, as he really only filled in that night. He wasn't to start until two weeks later or thereabout. He signed my brochure, though.

Re: Rare pictures 2
Ethan's Toronto mask kind of sucks compared to the elegant shapes of PK's and Rene Simard's and Paul Stanley's and Ciaran Sheehan's. I wonder why that is.
Re: Rare pictures 2
I completely agree. Most of the Toronto masks, especially Peter Karrie's and Rene Simard's were amazing things (and as the toronto souvenir brochures proved, look great in purple lighting) and Ethan Freeman's was a bit dissapointing and a completely different style, as if it was an old one from another production.SenorSwanky wrote:Ethan's Toronto mask kind of sucks compared to the elegant shapes of PK's and Rene Simard's and Paul Stanley's and Ciaran Sheehan's. Yeah, he was in the show from '91(could have even been '90) until around '93 as swing and understudied the Phantom and Raoul. In fact he is in that cast photo from '91 (the one where people weren't sure who Raoul was) stood behind the Phantom.
