Schwing!
(my all-time favourite male portrait from the 16th century... Ippolito da Porto: knight, govenor of Verona, Brescia and Bergamo on behalf of the Serenissima Republic (I.E. Venice), and commander of the armed forces in Corfu. Painted by Alessandro Maganza in 1573)
Not related to Phantom costumes at all, apart from showing that cod pieces was more prominent in period outfits than in the Red Death costume. And this is nothing. I can show you worse. A lot worse.

The three coolest Carlotta-Elissa skirts ever made (according to the Gospel of Anéa):
This picture was taken during Copenhagen Cultural Night in 2003. This grand Elissa skirt originally came from the Belgian production, but was blinged up when it came to Copenhagen. There are three things I am crazy about in this skirt: 1. The bell shape. 2. The massive amount of crimson red and gold just accented with green. 3. The hem. Not necessarily in the picture, but how it moved on stage. I don't know how they achieved the effect, but it looked like waves in the sand around the feet of the wearer. Absolutely amazing. Copenhagen only had one skirt for Carlotta (but many different bodices). This skirt has hence been worn by MANY Carlottas. In Belgium by An Lauwereins and probably several understudies, in Denmark by Rita Saxmark, Eva Hess Thaysen, Vera Borisova, Eva Malmgren, Karin Fridh, Malin Landing, Marina Li, Hanne Andersen, Birgit-Louise Frandsen and Åsa Nordgren!
The West End Carlotta skirts are interesting. When putting each new skirt side by side, one can see a gradual development, where the basic features remains the same, but the execution of them change a little every year. It's an interesting typological study. But enough of that. What I adore about this version is how the apron is crimson silk draped over crimson velvet, very elegant. And I love the colours, a sort of dusty gold teint, even in the green. I like it a lot better than the bright colours of newer versions. And I love how rounds shapes are repeated in various ways throughout the costume. I wish I had this exact picture in full length. I have a backstage picture of this skirt, but the light makes it appear muddy. I also have one of the next Carlotta in line, Sally Harrison, but the the skirt was way too long for her, which totally ruins the fine lines of the hem. Still, I remember how it looked live. It was da bomb. This skirt was worn in the West End around 2002-2005 sometime; the picture above shows Judith Gardner Jones from 2003.
The Las Vegas versions. Are they different than the other US versions? Not really. And yet they are. The colours appears more muted, and the shape more bell shaped. Or maybe it's just the fact that they were so very brand new and just looked fresher. Cause the basic execution and details are the same. The only radically different detail is that the beaded "belt and brooches" is attached to the actual bodice, and not on top of the apron. It looks pretty much the same as other versions, but I think it creates a better transaction between bodice and skirt. The picture above is Elena Jeanne Batman from the opening cast, and as far as I know the costume is still in use by the new Carlottas.

John Vs Killian is on again today.
The goal is to wear as many costumes as possible.
Killian has put up his first pic:
http://yfrog.com/z/nx3fddj
And other angles:
http://yfrog.com/186lvfpj
How many costumes can you name in this pic? (lol)
ETA Killian tweeted "#johnvskillian it's close. I had 24 pieces of clothing & @johnowenjones the rules state items and costumes of characters. Baton & head set??"

Re: Phantom costumes - real and replicas 1
Hahaha, hysterical!!
Lemme see... (and I'm partly guessing here!)
Il Muto wig (or the Man/Woman wig?) over ballet girl wig...
Carlotta's Elissa tiara...
The Phantom's mask...
Passarino's beard
Raoul's Final Lair shirt...
A Star Princess arm ruffle (NOW I know why Sierra Boggess didn't wear any at the concert )
That red epaulette seems very random... fireman?
Hannibal soldier gold armband
Madame Giry's cane
Il Muto hairdresser's apron/kit
Buquet's apron
Masquerade Rigoletto's leg deco
Don Attilio's... erm...rump ruffle bustle?
Meg Giry's white Don Juan Rehearsal shawl
A black waistcoat...
And two different shoes, but the picture is too blurry to give away details.
But again, hysterical!!

Oh, that is *hilarious*
Anea, I love how you describe that crinoline as a 'rump ruffle'. Hehehe, poor Don Atilio!
Can't wait to see John's photo, and thanks to PG for keeping us updated about the John v. Killian stuff!
ETA: I think the red epaulette that Killian is wearing may be from the Masquerade Band Drummer's uniform jacket.

JOJ must have been strategically picking out his pieces because this took him f.o.r.e.v.e.r. to post:

And to prove it's really him under there:

The winner will be judged tonight at 9pm London time.

Re: Phantom costumes - real and replicas 1
So, I was minding my own business tonight, sculpting a new prosthetic mold for myself...
When I took a break, and then discovered that my trusty FX Warehouse Inc one-upped me. They now produce a replica OLC foam latex deformity:

John Owen Jones won the #johnvskillian, for those who wondered.... Killian is properly devastated
Gutted with the result if #johnvskillian. Genuinely!! Apparently I wasn't colorful enough!!! White shirt killed me!
Phantom on a Budget, your work is beyond amazing. I'm applauding on the other side of the pond!

Aw, Phantom on a Budget. I give you a lot of credit, girl. By far, your creations are so amazing. They have much more depth and love to them because you've made them and you have proved (for years, may I add) that if someone wanted to do a wig, a deformity, etc. they don't have to order. They can make it themselves.

I wonder if FXWarehouse has licensing rights to use MC's pic and sell the prosthetics as Phantom of the Opera pieces....

Well, shouldn't the page have a copyright from RUG? :/

Re: Phantom costumes - real and replicas 1
Aww, thank you so much you three! Love you guys!
Yeah, I highly doubt they have a copyright, knowing RUG. They also produce stuff from The Grinch, and I assume they don't have copyrights for those either. So we'll see how long that lasts (although I for one will not be calling them out). I might purchase a set to see exactly how they fit. The sizing looks a little off on the cheek piece, but it's hard to tell exactly from a photo.

Aw no problem, lady!
As for the deformity: it looks like they're missing a few holes (is that right?). I see the ones on his cheek, but he has some on his sideburns that don't look like they're included.

Re: Phantom costumes - real and replicas 1
It's really kinda hard to tell. I think they are all there, but I just looked at it again, and I think it looks off because the upper lip piece doesn't appear to be included. The bottom lip is also not part of the set. So not a perfect mold, maybe that's how they get away with copyright issues.
Re: Phantom costumes - real and replicas 1
Is that your sculpt in your previous post, Phantom on a Budget? I think I prefer your design to the FXWarehouse one.

Re: Phantom costumes - real and replicas 1
Thank you! Yep that's mine. I went for a more exaggerated take on the OLC design. I tried something more subtle a few years ago, but it was far too subtle and didn't turn out well. We'll see how this one turns out.
Re: Phantom costumes - real and replicas 1
I wonder how the mask will sit on the new set-up.

Re: Phantom costumes - real and replicas 1
I think it'll be ok. There's some room in the cheek, so I don't think it'll be a problem. Give me about a week and I guess we'll find out!

Does anyone by chance have photos of the Phantom's Mandarin Robe from Broadway, US Tour, and Las Vegas?
I've got pics of Michael Lackey and John Cudia wearing the Tour one, I think.
Thanks!

1. Howard McGilling, from the 2006 record-breaking brochure. The picture is probably a lot better there.
2. and 3. The Vegas costume just finished, for the final fitting.
4. and 5. Mandarin costume from the US tour, both with Sara Jean Ford as Christine. John Cudia as the Phantom?
Those Vegas ones are from a photo series the production did of the costume as toiles, as partly finished and when finished. Some, including these, were shown at the big screen under the Phan Week some years ago. This is merely photos of the screen, hence the quality...
