Ladygodiva, I love 30 Rock. Like, LOVE it. I've watched all three seasons (only 3 have been released on DVD in Norway so far) multiple times, and I'm eagerly awaiting season 4. Also a big fan of MadMen. Not that THAT is a sitcom in any way...
I agree that Curb Your Enthusiasm is a hit and miss. Some parts made me laugh a lot, some parts are really slow. But I guess the unevenness also adds a charm of its own.
Agreed on 30 Rock and Curb.
another good tv show was Cheers the first season was excellent, the verbal sparing match between Diane a mega-brained, over educated, smart woman (who because her Fiancee dumps her and leaves her at the bar) and Sam the womanizing bar owner, and former baseball star, is fab, if you see the first season, the second season was not as good as the first season, highly reccomend the first season,..the show ran for 11 seasons, most were hit or miss (Like most long running shows.) I really liked the older bartender Coach, who died in real life after a few seasons, he was the heart of the show, and then when Woody Harrelson took over, in a different character,
and Frasier, a good show as well, major stars did voice call ins in the seasons, great cast, the best characters were Bebe, Frasiers agent who would sell her mother down river for a deal played by Harriet Sansom Harris, Lilith, Fraisers ex wife blayed by Bebe Neuwirth. and the cutest star of the cast the dog Eddie, also Kristin Chenoweth was on the show being trained by Frasiers agent.
P.S. can you reccommend which season or episode of Mad Men to watch, my librarie owns a copy of it. (Yes another plug for the public library) People I kid you not, check out your local library, and if your library does'nt have what your looking for, book, dvd, cd, just ask they can probably get it from a bigger city library and have it sent to your local

127 Hours. I've never been impressed with James Franco as an actor before, but he does a tremendous job here, carrying almost the entire movie with only him onscreen. I was one who didn't like Slumdog Millionaire either, but Danny Boyle does a great job on this movie, as does whoever edited it. Surreal but real at the same time. Great score too.
Re: Movies you've seen recently (possible spoilers!)
How Do You Know? Awful. I was so bored, I didn't really watch past the first half hour. Was on my computer while it was playing. Owen Wilson is Owen Wilson, and he's been in plenty of bad movies. But what a waste of Jack Nicholson, Paul Rudd, et al. Just a terrible script and direction, and no chemistry between the characters. You don't feel anything for them. And that's sad because James L. Brooks wrote and directed two of my favorite romantic comedies: As Good As It Gets and Spanglish.
Re: Movies you've seen recently (possible spoilers!)
got two movies from the library,
Devil, about five people who get on an elevator and one of them just happens to be the devil, fairly interesting story, a short movie at one hour and twenty minutes, good ending.
Its kind of a funny story, about a neurotic kid, who feigns wanting to kill himself, and ends up in a physicatric ward, I watched the first hour of this movie, it was excruciating. did not want to even bother to watch the end.

Watched The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (Swedish) with my friend Wednesday night. I thought the book was better, and they left a WHOLE bunch of stuff out and changed some of the bits. To me, I enjoyed the bits that they left out of the film, so I was pretty upset they didn't make it in the final cut. I also thought even though Noomi was a damn fiesty Lisabeth but the guy playing Mikael wasn't what I thought he'd look like.

Just saw the movie The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, I have not yet read the book, this movie had me at the edge of my seat, thrilling, scary, chilling and mind boogleing, great movie, I will have to read the books,
also got from the library, Nurse Jackie, TV series season one, cleverly written, although most of the characters are quite awful, but clever and original, sometimes funny,

Re: Movies you've seen recently (possible spoilers!)
I finally saw The Hurt Locker. Was actually surprised how meaningful (in a sad way) the ending was.
Re: Movies you've seen recently (possible spoilers!)
Finally saw The King's Speech, and thought it was incredible. Colin Firth was amazing.

I also saw that this week and completely agree. I've loved him since Mr. Darcy, of course, but the subtle expressiveness of his acting never ceases to amaze me.

Re: Movies you've seen recently (possible spoilers!)
I just saw The King's Speech last night, too, and I loved it.
I figured I'd like it because I'd heard a lot of praise for it from friends who have pretty good taste in movies. I wanted to see it at the theater, but didn't have a chance. Finally got it on Netflix last week.
I knew the general outcome because I was familiar - at least in passing, thanks to older relatives who remembered when all it what big news - of Bertie's accession and his brother's marriage to Wallis Simpson...but even knowing didn't take away from the tension of the story or from the sense of struggle.
Excellent acting all around. I usually (though not always) find Helena Bonham Carter a little annoying (and didn't like her as Mrs. Lovett), but I liked her here. I normally dislike the characters that Rush plays (not the actor himself), but really liked him here. I've liked Colin Firth for a while - he remains my favorite Darcy - and he was excellent in this.
I also loved the color and light of the movie. It was definitely something that stood out for me repeatedly.

Yes, the visual aspect was excellent--Hooper did an excellent job of creating mood and place. He's been mentioned as a director for the film version of Les Mis, and based on this evidence could really do that credit.
I missed out on KS in theaters because by the time I was able to get around to it they'd replaced the original with the bowdlerized version, which I refused to see on principle. Besides, the sight of Firth dropping a string of F-bombs in that stuffed-shirt way was too good to pass up.

I finished watching the Kings' Speech today on the plane. (Yes, I went for a vacation!)
The entire speech had me holding my breath. I was so ... moved. It sounded glorious.
But yes, wonderful character driven film!
Started watching 'Goodbye, Lenin!', I really like the film so far! I will be finishing it later. Daniel Brühl is so hot.

Saw Thor in 3D tonight. Had thus far resisted the 3D fad (yes, I never saw Avatar), but since it's probably here to stay in one form or another, I thought I'd check it out. Damn, it was expensive though ($13.50 versus $9.50 for a regular movie). Pretty good movie. Anthony Hopkins was outstanding as Odin, and Chris Hemsworth was the living embodiment of Thor almost as much as Christopher Reeve was of Superman 33 years ago. Natalie Portman and most of the rest of the cast were also very good. A little hoky script, and I wasn't too impressed with a lot of the CG (didn't look too realistic). But all in all, a pretty good take on the Thor property, and I'm loving how Marvel continues to integrate its universe, intertwining characters from previous films and flashing forward to The Avengers.
Re: Movies you've seen recently (possible spoilers!)
I saw the new Pirates of the Caribbean last night. I braced myself for disappointment and instead, I was pleasantly surprised. I can see why people get tired of the series, but I resent people picking it apart and criticizing it as though they expected it to be some Oscar contender. It's a Disney action movie based on a theme park ride. If you were expecting gritty realism, then the joke is on you, my friend. Sorry.
I do not think Johnny Depp is getting stale as Captain Jack. If anything, I loved seeing him as the star of his own show without getting shoved aside by some flat romantic subplot with Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightly. Yep, the movie was fun. Big, stupid, popcorn fun. I had a good time.

Have not seen any of the Pirates of the Caribean, but will get them from the library,
another movie "franchise" I never saw, is Back to the Future. I actually got if from the library and it was pretty good, next on my list are the Matrix (Never saw them either.
saw a few movies,
Buried, a claustriphobic movie, a man is buried alive in the Middle East in wood box, all he has is a cell phone and a lighter and a flashlight. the movie was interesting, a little long, the only other characters are those he talks to on the cell. would have made a good flashback on a crime show but not a full lenght movie.
Weekend at Bernies, a fun, comedy from years ago, funny, great comedy,

Finally saw Avatar last Saturday. It was incredible. I was really getting into it in the final scenes when the Navi decided to fight back. It was like Braveheart with blue people.
Re: Movies you've seen recently (possible spoilers!)
Recently I watched 'Red Dawn' for the first time. It was a movie that was made back in the 80's, which tells you a lot about the plot line. 'What would you do if you looked out the window of your school and saw Russians dropping down (paratrooping) onto your football field'? It's basically a what if movie that stared Patrick Swayze, Charlie Sheen, Jennifer Grey, and Lea Thompson. Maybe if I saw the film in the eighties I would relate to the topics in the film more. I was pretty bored with it.
I also finally watched 'The Mission' and wow... what a glorious, beautiful film. Out of all the films that Robert DeNiro ever did in his life (of what I've seen), I find the Mission my favorite. The soundtrack, cinematography, and the supporting role played by Jeremy Irons made this truly a great purchase. But the soundtrack, lovely, utterly lovely. It has a religious tone to it, but if you're looking for something with a powerful message - watch the film.

in agreement with you on both movies The Mission was glorious and awesome....while I saw the movie Red Dawn years ago, and I am not really a Patrick Swayze fan, (Actually have never seen Dirty Dancing, only a few scenes) while it was'nt a terrible movie, it was'nt a good movie either.
a fantasitic WW2 movie, Das Boot, quite a good movie, while I kind of felt odd watching the "other side" story in a War movie, and it was quite compelling, starring Jürgen Prochnow, a claustorphobic, terrifying, and thrilling movie, telling the story of World War two Submarine, somewhat based on the true stroy of the Commander of the boat. quite good, loved the commanders almost detestation of the leaders of Germany at the time, I actually found myself at the edge of my seat.

Re: Movies you've seen recently (possible spoilers!)
Love and Other Drugs. Really cute. Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway had a lot of chemstry.
Re: Movies you've seen recently (possible spoilers!)
I had a movie extravaganza this weekend. Here I go:
1. Pirates of the Caribbean 4: While I am not a fan of the Pirates film (or franchise), I do think this one seemed to be better than the last two. I like the fact they toned down Jack Sparrow. He's no longer the 'comic relief', he actually seemed to show his intelligence for once. I love the relationship between the priest and the mermaid. Though, the Blackbeard story was messy and confusing at times, I did like Penelope Cruz' character. Overall, I was entertained and it kept my interest. But I really wish the tone of the ride was reflected more than the supernatural. :/
2. Thor: I rather liked this film, though like Pirates, it had flaws in the script too. The relationship between Thor and Jane was random and it came out of no-where. I liked Jane's character but she hardly did anything! It hardly glossed over her research. The scenes in Vallhalla were amazing, gorgeous, but the whole movie became a bit of a mess when they were on earth. Like someone else pointed out, there was no depth to the 'science'/'astrology'. Then again, I'm not that mad with it because its a movie that's supposed to lead into The Avengers. So, overall, it had an amazing cast, it was wonderfully directed, but its script was a bit weak.
3. Goodbye, Lenin! : I started watching this the beginning of the month, I never finished it because I was on the plane ride home. Now that I finally did, I enjoyed it but I wasn't *over the moon by it*. I thought the story was pretty good. The movie turned out rather sad from the moment they went to the summer home.
4. Bridesmaids: Saw this too. Like Hangover, I wasn't wowed by it. But I really liked the storyline and I could relate to it - a lot. Loved Chris O'Dowd. He's starting to become one of my favorite actors. Kiersten Wig ... don't really care much for her. Overall, it was a fun movie, but it was one of those films I'd rather rent than pay to see. But it was a girl's night, and like I said - Chris O'Dowd.
5. Hors de Prix (Priceless): What a cute film. I really enjoyed it. It was funny and sentimental. The guy was rather handsome, too. If you like Doris Day type films, then you should see this.

Re: Movies you've seen recently (possible spoilers!)
X-Men: First Class. Meh. Really frustrating on a character/material level. Maybe a non-comics fan would enjoy it more, and my friend certainly did. Said it was the best superhero movie he's ever seen. But I usually hate retroactive origin movies (ones that go back and tell the characters' back stories after a franchise has already existed) because they try to make everything so cutesy and force characters to tie neatly together like they're destined to "meet cute" all within the span of days and spend the rest of their saga together, rather than introducing characters naturally over time. And while I often like when superhero movies are made to ground the story and characters in real human history, I hate how they randomly shoved the Cuban missile crisis into this story. I really could've done without this movie. I like how the first two X films introduced the characters better.
I also joined Netflix recently, so I've already seen two older movies that I'd never seen more than a few minutes of on TV before. I loved Groundhog Day. Bill Murray's almost always enjoyable, and he had a lot of chemistry with Andie Macdowell, who's really appealing for some reason. Planes, Trains & Automobiles wasn't as good. I usually love Steve Martin, but I didn't think John Hughes made this movie well. John Candy's annoyingness and the terrible situations he put Martin through were more excruciating than entertaining to me. I guess I felt Martin's pain too much, and couldn't enjoy him not getting home to his family.

Saw Super 8 on Thursday. It was a pre-release showing.
Overall, I *enjoyed* the film. The movie basically revolved around the group of kids, filming an amateur film by train tracks. Out of no where a car comes, derails the train, leading the kids to scrobble around in the midst of the wreckage, wondering what that was all about. The next thing you know, something escapes from the train.
Pros: If you enjoyed ET, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Jurassic Park, Stand By Me, and The Goonies. Chances are you'll like this film. It has all those elements mixed into one. The kid actors are fairly new to the scene and they really do shine. So, it was a good script for them to all start out with.
Cons: The movie had some flaws. The background on some of the characters could be fleshed out more, and the ending with the 'reveal' of the monster was a bit depressing. I hoped that it wasn't going to be CGI, but it was. (Perhaps I was thinking too much of something crossed between ET/Jurassic Park in terms of robotechnics.) Oh and those damn lens flares!
Overall, my friend and I were immensely wrapped up in the film and its definately one of the best movies I've seen in a while. If you see it, see it in IMAX. The surround sound gives it a punch.

I agree with you guys, she alone is a good reason to watch a movie. Even "The Da Vinci Code", though that is her weakest performance to date.ML6 wrote:starryeyed wrote:I can't believe you've watched Priceless! I've watched three different versions of Jane Austen's "Emma" this weekend. I've seen them all before, but not in a row! Each has strong and weak spots. Emma from 1996, with Emma Paltrow in the lead, is the most promising one. Alas I think it's marred by the miscast Paltrow, whose bland acting and nasal voice just don't come across as an Emma to me. But the supporting cast is wonderful, and the visuals are very nice. I also like how they've cut corners everywhere to make it a movie instead of a TV series - gentle cutting, yet effective. Jeremy Northam as Mr. Knightley and Toni Collette as Harriet Smith is very well cast, and Sophie Thompson is one of the best Miss Bates to date. So this movie with another Emma would probably have been a favourite of mine, because of the visuals and the excellent supporting cast. Paltrow just doesn't do it for me.

The Emma TV series, also from 1996, has a more enigmatic Emma in Kate Beckinsale, but I still think the title role is the weak point. I also find this adaption surprisingly.... beige, both in actual colours and in performance. Everything seems subdued, apart from the daydreaming parts they've put in. I also like the opening and ending, which is different from other versions, and I think it has perfectly portrayed villains (read: Mr. and Mrs. E). And it has another strong Mr. Kightley, in Mark Strong (pun not intended!). But little stands out as memorable. So fine moments, but a bit too dull overall.

The Emma TV series from 1972 is also a beige affaire, but moreso because of the time colorite than the content. And I don't think I've ever seen so much synthetic costumes in a period piece! It has a more fierce and self-assured Emma than the others. Though I think she lacks the charm, Doran Goodwin is still the one making most impression of the three adaptions I've seen. Debbie Bowen portrays a sweet and easily swayed Harriet Smith, very fitting. This is also longer than the others and hence more faithful to the source material, which is fun to see for a change.
Now I REALLY want to see the 2009 mini series, which many claim to be the best adaption so far. Anyone seen it?

ME ME ME! I LOVE IT. I thought the Paltrow one was the definitive one, but this one totally takes the cake. Everything about it is perfect. Adored it. Golly. Watch it, lady, you will love it! (Still love the 1996 one, however, for Rachel Portman's score.)
