It was only in passing, I think, but it's still a worthwhile read.SenorSwanky wrote:Really? I'll have to check that out at some point.phantomphan1992 wrote:Actually, I just reread his book, and he mentioned that car, I believe.
Umm, another movie I've seen recently. Letters to Juliet? It was cute. Predictable, but there were a few very funny parts. Definitely a chick-flick.

According to Empire, Disney's planning to make a sequel to Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
I am very, VERY displeased.
And besides BatB, they're now planning to 3Dize Lion King.
So much FAIL.

Saw this on ONTD and I wanted to cry. The guy who does the voice for Roger Rabbit, he's ... well, he's a little senile now. I really don't think he can do the role. And the sequel makes me angry. If there is no Delores, Eddie, or WB characters, I don't give a damn. But then again, it would be interesting to see the new Disney characters involved in this film.
But no, no no no no!

With me, this is kinda like Phantom... IT DOESN'T NEED A SEQUEL. It ended perfectly and nothing more needs to be added. I mean, a teensy part of me would love a new, gorgeous Jessica Rabbit song, but... NO. This is why we have fanfic. And why it should stay that way.
Re: Movies you've seen recently (possible spoilers!)
I think there should be a statute of limitations on sequels--if they can't come up with a good idea for one after, say, five years or so, it shouldn't be attempted.
The idea of a hand-drawn adaptation of Snow Queen, on the other hand, has promise.

Eclipse. It has its really corny, eye-rolling moments as all the Twilight films do, but it's probably, overall, the best of the series in terms of character and drama and aesthetics. Maybe the first is still better (though I absolutely hated it when I first saw it), but this is certainly better than New Moon.
Re: Movies you've seen recently (possible spoilers!)
Last Airbender aka Avatar. I made better films than that in high school. Except for the CG, which was pretty cool. But really... Shyamalan shouldn't be allowed to make any more movies. ever.

The bad movie geek in me REALLY wants to see this (but will probably wait for DVD).
Speaking of DVD, rented The Hurt Locker last week. Tense, brutal, and sad, as befits the subject matter.

She's Out of My League. Not a lot of charisma or chemistry between the "she" and the "my," so to speak. Has funny and insightful moments, but overall, pretty bland.
Re: Movies you've seen recently (possible spoilers!)
The Wolfman. Alright. Drags a little, but solid performances and a nice visual atmosphere. I would have preferred less CG, though, and more practical makeup effects for the title character(s) and sets for the London scenes.
Re: Movies you've seen recently (possible spoilers!)
Invictus. Great performances from Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela and Matt Damon as the rugby star who led South Africa's team to victory with some help from the man at the top. Very inspiring film, though for me, the rugby sequences were the least thrilling bits; Freeman's scenes with his security team and the rugby players were what really made the movie.
Princess and the Frog. Very charming movie; I think it deserves to be ranked alongside Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King as a Disney classic. Yes, it is a "princess story" (in some respects; surprisingly not in others), but it has a lesson far more grounded in reality than most of Disney's other fairy tale-inspired films.
Shutter Island. Wow. Mind-blowing, surreal, and different in every way you can imagine. This is definitely a film to watch at least twice. Great performances from the whole cast, and the plot twists are sure to keep you guessing who (if anyone) has it right.
Toy Story 3. Another winner from Pixar, and quite possibly their best film yet; certainly the best of the Toy Story series. The biggest strength of the movie is that it makes you care about the plastic characters, so that when they're put in very real-seeming danger, it keeps you on the edge of your seat. However, the 3-D is rather subtle... I think that's better than it being really obvious and in-your-face, but I wouldn't recommend paying extra just to see it in 3-D; it doesn't add much (if anything) to the experience. Oh, and the short film they show before the feature is great and in keeping with Pixar's standards.

The Bounty Hunter. Bleh. Probably one of the least funny and entertaining movies I've ever seen. Fell asleep near the end. Jason Sudeikis, who I often like on SNL, is incredibly annoying in a minor role.
Re: Movies you've seen recently (possible spoilers!)
Inception. An intriguing puzzle-box of a movie with a great cast and some awesome visual effects.

"The Storm" (2009)
Seeing it is almost three hours long I looked it up and found out it was originally a TV mini series. But even that can't explain why this is, without doubt, the worst crap I've ever watched. OMG bad! Sucky McSuckerson! Nuff said.

The Crazies. Just awful. Half the time, you couldn't understand what was going on (and I don't mean in a Hitchcockian what-you-don't-see-is-scary way, but a this-film-is-so-lit-so-dark-you-can't-see-what-the-heck-is-going-on way). You don't really feel for the characters, the characterization of the government is stupid, and a lot of things just don't make sense.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Now that's a good film. Nearly perfect in its concept, its dialogue, its structure, its character development, the acting, the cinematography, the score.

That is an excellent movie. In a way it's the polar opposite of your average romantic comedy--instead of a trite, sappy romance, it's an intelligent look on how our relationships define and affect us.
Just snagged a copy of The Lightning Thief from the library. Not as bad as I thought it was going to be, but nowhere near as good as the book. A lot of the things that made Riordan's series stand out from the glut of Harry Potter copycats--the smart-aleck tone, the moral ambiguity of the Greek gods, and the clever tie-ins between the mythological and modern worlds (although they kept the Lotus Casino, which was nice)--were missing from the film, rendering it rather unimpressive.

The Men Who Stare At Goats. Absolutely hilarious, and it made me want to find out more about the apparently real occurrences and people on which it was based. Fantastic performances from George Clooney, Ewan MacGregor, Jeff Bridges... the whole cast, really.
Bolt. As skeptical as I was of a Disney CG movie that didn't involve Pixar (I admit I still have yet to see Chicken Little and The Wild), this one surprised me. It had a concept that was more original than the trailers let on, and some of the sight gags were actually funny. (To me, anyway.) So yeah, entertaining flick... Not what I'd call Oscar-worthy or a game-changer for the medium, but still a fun ride.

Re: Movies you've seen recently (possible spoilers!)
Valentine's Day. I'm not sure why critics savaged this movie. I thought the screenwriters and director did a great job weaving together so many characters and making you care about them in relatively little screen time, and the huge, star-studded ensemble cast was great across the board. I could have done without the Taylors Lautner and Swift scenes, but the scenes with Ashton Kutcher, Jennifer Garner, Jessica Alba, Hector Elizondo, Topher Grace, Shirley McLaine, Patrick Dempsey, and Anne Hathaway were particularly poignant and funny.
Re: Movies you've seen recently (possible spoilers!)
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Exquisite film... I admit I have yet to read any of the books, but this was quite a superb, multi-layered film. Certainly more than "just" a mystery story. I'll have to check out the books now, and perhaps see the sequel soon.
Re: Movies you've seen recently (possible spoilers!)
Finally saw Toy Story 3 with my mom and nieces yesterday. Another excellent Pixar offering, and a beautiful way to conclude the franchise. The "Day and Night" short was also a hoot.

Youth in Revolt. Amazing. Michael Cera is incredibly funny in such a meek, subtle way. Highly recommended.
The Losers. Pretty well shot. Really just a slick showcase for cool effects and characters posing and running off Bondian one-liners. But pretty entertaining as such movies come. Doesn't take itself too seriously.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. Probably one of the worst movies I have ever seen. I have a real string of them lately. I have no idea how Chris Columbus managed to make such a bad film, how they let a kindergartner write their screenplay, and how that script managed to attract so many good actors. There's a buddy role that is probably this film's equivalent of Jar Jar Binks; I wanted to shoot him from scene one, and he managed to keep returning to annoy the crap out of me scene after scene.

The Mist (2007) was an all around great movie! It was scary, suspenseful, and had some very unexpected shocking moments. The ending is jaw dropping.

I thought that was really mediocre, very B-movie-ish. Though pretty much any movie with Marsha Gay Harden turns me off.Callie Daae wrote:The Mist (2007) was an all around great movie! It was scary, suspenseful, and had some very unexpected shocking moments. The ending is jaw dropping.

A Single Man
God, I loved this one. It was quirkier than I expected, with the many memory flashes and/or fantasies, but Colin Firth does a helluva role. And Tom Ford is a surprise as a director.
The other Boleyn girl
I dunno why I haven't see this ages ago. Probably the odd costuming that ticked me off. I didn't know what to expect, but meeeh. This is Tudor chick flick. Thin storyline, definitely not historical accurate (the sisters were never particularly close or good friends), and a total miscast. I know many has commented upon this, but casting Natalie Portman as the sexy one and Scarlett Johansson as the wallflower? Who are they kidding? And too bad so much of the costume work is excellent, when the lead roles looks like they've stepped out of a local ren faire, albeit the expensive sort. Lots of trembling lips and big eyes, but when the supporting role of queen Katherine of Aragon impress me the most, there's something wrong in the movie... It's like seeing Phantom for the first time and thinking Madame Giry is the star of the show.
Sex and the City - the movie
AKA the FIRST SATC movie. Saw the second one this summer, and pretty much hated it. Went back to the first movie, and it struck me why it's just so much better. I didn't totally love it when it first came, but I liked it. Seeing it again was a nice experience. It has a story to tell, and the Carrie/Big breakup is quite powerful. I love that Sarah Jessica Parker allows us to see her thus unflattering, with drab makeup and hair, in closeups. I love how the friendship is depicted. There's some powerful moments in there. And the aftermath is so sweet. But I might only think that because I work as a personal assistant to someone and can totally relate, ha-ha. Yeah, this movie both have a nerve and a story to tell, PLUS the usual bunch of glamour and humour. The secon movie just attempted to add glamour and humour, and it even failed at that.

Re: Movies you've seen recently (possible spoilers!)
Extraordinary Measures. Not presented in any extraordinary way, but a really solid production and a great story. Neither Harrison Ford nor Brendan Fraser are always convincing in their roles, but they both generally do a pretty good job.
Re: Movies you've seen recently (possible spoilers!)
Kick-Ass. I wasn't familiar with the comic, but thought the film was quite excellent and original in its concept. The acting was superb all around, and the action sequences (while very violent in many cases) were a joy to watch, usually because of the dark humor involved.
Re: Movies you've seen recently (possible spoilers!)
I'm dying to see Kick-Ass. I hadn't heard of the comic either (I used to be a huge comic reader and collector, but stopped regularly buying them and following the industry somewhere about spring 2004), but I can now tell it came from the mind of Mark Millar (the same guy who created Wanted) and John Romita, Jr. (a great artist and nice guy I was lucky to meet once).
Re: Movies you've seen recently (possible spoilers!)
Kick-Ass. Very fun. I hate Nic Cage, but he at least does a funny Adam West parody as Big Daddy. Chloe Moretz absolutely stole the show. More violent than I expected, and actually not quite as funny or amusing as I expected, but still very good.
Re: Movies you've seen recently (possible spoilers!)
Has anyone seen SALT, and if so, was it any good?
