2016 SWEDISH PRODUCTION
Finally TPOTO will be back in Stockholm! The new Swedish production will open on Wednesday 14th September 2016. After playing The Phantom in the West End and on Broadway, Peter Jöback will headline the new production as The Phantom. This production will be performed in Jöback's native language, Swedish. The new production will use Lars Sjöberg's translation from the 1989 Swedish production. Producer Vicky von der Lancken will produce the show together with 2Entertain, Sinclair Entertainment and The Really Useful Group. This will be the second time Sweden will see the original production as it will be a replica of the Harold Prince's version. Arthur Masella will again recreate Prince's direction in Sweden, as he did in 1989 at the Oscars Theatre. This time Cirkus Theatre will play host to the show, a much larger theatre as it seats 1773 people, as opposite Oscars Theatre's 818 seats. Cirkus Theatre has been the home to the original Swedsih production of Les Misérables in 1990/1991 and the huge smash Kristina från Duvemåla in 1997 which also starred Peter Jöback, as well as the first Swedish language production of Chess in 2002/2003 and Mamma Mia! in 2007.
As Christine, currenty alternating the same role in London, Emmi Christensson will join Jöback on stage.
There will be six performances a week. Wednesday through Friday at 7.30pm, Saturday at 2.30pm and 7.30pm, Sundays at 3pm.
Tickets will be priced 225-995 SEK (€24-€106). Tickets go on sale November 2 (although presale has already begun). Tickets can be purchased through Showtic.
I hope this new thread will be for all fans of this new production, where we can share news, gossip, reviews and all things Phantom Stockholm!

yes, i'd just checked their schedule. Very interesting, 6 shows a week! Though definitely preferred for the actors.

I guess it's Swedish union laws that says maximum of 6 performances a week! When Phantom was playing the Oscars Theatre in Stockholm they began with 7 performances a week and then changed it after a couple of years to 6.
By the way, booking is to 18 december 2016.

I'm definitely going. I'm assuming the run will extend beyond December 2016, though?
Re: 2016 SWEDISH PRODUCTION
I hope so!
Ideally, I'd like to see the current West End cast's last show in September, a quick pit stop in Oberhausen (but we don't know yet when that production closes next year), and then Stockholm. A tri-lingual experience.

Interview with producer Vicky von der Lancken
In March when the revival of The Phantom of the Opera in Stockholm was announced, producer Vicky von der Lancken gave a short interview with newspaper Skånska Dagbladet:
"It has always been a dream for me and co-producer Bosse Andersson (2Entertain) to bring back Phantom to Stockholm. We are so happy. We went to see Peter (Jöback) when he performed in the West End and we then felt we hade to make this happen."
"For six years we've been in negotiations, working on the contracts. Now we are proud and very happy to produce the show and having Peter Jöback as the Phantom. We also went to New York to see him. As a Swede you feel very proud when you see him doing so well".
Vicky sees this production as a tribute to Peter:
"He has mad an amazing journey."
Was it hard to convince him to take the part?
"Not at all. And he is very involved in the production. Together we have been back to London to see another Phantom perform and also seen the show in Hamburg. After that I realized Peter is outstanding in the role. He really gives from his inside as I've never seen any one else do."
Vicky says there is no problem to find performers in Sweden:
"We have fantastic artist in Sweden, and we also look for opera singers."
Vicky also says the show will run for a year.
The reporter also asked if they would like to produce Love Never Dies:
"No we haven't talked about it at all".

Re: 2016 SWEDISH PRODUCTION
So excited! I predict all principals will have holidays now and then, but it seems possible Emmi won't have an official, weekly alternate?!
Also- I am so happy this isn't a Stage Entertainment production. Not that I dislike SE... I just like not having the same producer everywhere... is it going to be the original Swedish set?

Don't wait too long to get tickets..... I got a pre-release offer (ie an offer to buy before the tickets were officially released to the general public) and the shows up until mid-november seem to be selling out very quickly. Couldn't book anything after the 15 november 2016 right now, they're not releasing all the tickets straight away.

The original swedish set was re-scaled for the danish production, and it seems like a little to much job to scale them up again for a couple of months run. Besides I think Det Ny Teater is going for another POTO in the next years.
BUT it seems like Sweden might get the german SE sets. The Oberhausen production WILL close before the summer, and no further castings has been announced for a german Phantom for next fall. And the swedish producer said she was in Hamburg to work with the show. Hopefully they will have the same lights as in Hamburg, because that was a treat for the eye!

In other Swedish TPOTO news it was announced today that Gothenburg Opera House will produce in co-operation with the Finnish National Opera the non replica version currently playing in Helsinki for their 2017 repertoire. Same director and the same show as in Helsinki, performed in English and with a new cast.

Ticket sales for Phantom sets record
Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera have a history of records. Now the ticket sales for the production at Cirkus Theatre in Stockholm sets another one. During the first week 80,000 tickets has been sold. And it's 10 months until the show opens!
- There are still tickets available but it's fantastic to see that it's not only us who works with the show that look forward to see The Phantom of the Opera back in Sweden, and with our country's biggest musical star Peter Jöback. I know for sure this fantastic combination has attracted many of the people that have bought tickets, says Bosse Andersson, producer at 2Entertain.
Last time The Phantom of the Opera played in Sweden, 1989-1995, at Oscars Theatre, it became Sweden's longest running show in history with 1,173 performances.

Re: 2016 SWEDISH PRODUCTION
Only 1 understudy for everyone or are they only showing the 1:st covers and will add 2:nd covers later ?
Last time The Phantom was played in Sweden, the principal "Raoul" was also a Phantom cover. Would be interesting to see Anton Zetterholm understudy Peter Jöback !

2016 Swedish Production.
Oh, am envious! :-( All we get here is the new U.S. tour unless you can get down to NYC to see/experience the real thing. And I hope the Finnish non-replica is good! :-( The new U.S. tour's kind of made me nervous about non-replica productions these days. So I hope the producers there have far better taste and judgement!

Re: 2016 SWEDISH PRODUCTION
Just saw on instagram that they had their photo shoot yesterday and there were some very tiny photos.
But 2 things stood out for me, main one is that they are using the aussie candelabras (the ones that fold up and look funny) this makes me wonder if they aren't using alot more of the world tour set. There was also a shot of the theatre, since its not at the original Oskars, there is more room and it looks like it may be more of a full proscenium (just like what they show on their home page)
Also it seems that Christine is a brunette once more (unless that pic was the alternate, but it didnt look so to me.
Could not tell much about the phantom but his mask did look clunky, so I guess Peter wont be using his Broadway mask, which I kinda doubted since that would belong to the broadway production. Will have to wait till bigger pics come out to see if he is using his london mask, a new Swedish mask similar to the original, or those god awfull masks that go with the word tour/aussie/russian productions.
Hopefully they will release the pics soon

Previews has begun!
Previews, which are for invited people only, began September 8. Pictured below Emmi Christensson, who for this production wears a dark brown wig instead of a blonde as in the London production, as Christine, and Peter Jöback as The Phantom. Official opening September 14.

Monsieur André recast!
Sindre Postholm, from Norway, has replaced Pontus Helander as Monsieur André. Helander had to leave the show just a couple of weeks ago and Postholm stepped in last minute.

Re: 2016 SWEDISH PRODUCTION
Have got tickets for this in November, and last night I actually dreamt about seeing the show. But it was a bit of a nightmare, there was just so much wrong. There was no chandelier, just a kind of white ceiling fixture light with a phantom mask on it, in white, so you couldn't really see it. In the middle of the auditorium, someone had set a row of Ionic columns with veils between them, so you couldn't really see the stage. The cast was wearing blue unitards in some kind of stretchy fabric, and everything was completely weird. When I complained I was told that it was a non-replica version and if I didn't like it, then tough....
This has been one of my weirdest dreams in a very long time. Am having some trouble bending my mind around hearing it in Swedish, but will try to prepare myself by listening to the old recording with Samuelsson etc etc. I am not a fan of Peter Jöback, but he is interesting in that his voice has echoes of a Crawford quality. But the lyrics just sound so weird in Swedish! Oh dear oh dear.

Re: 2016 SWEDISH PRODUCTION
Saw the Swedish production last Saturday, at Cirkus in Stockholm. The biggest set so far, the proscenium was rather spread out, and the chandelier the largest in my experience. A very satisfying overture visually, with lots of flashing as it ascended. Will be back with a review, but in brief: a mostly positive experience, but not overwhelmingly so. It was professional, well-executed, the usual fabulous costumes, a competent cast etc etc. so I would recommend it. I did struggle a little with the Swedish, but the music helped me over that threshold. Have not seen it in Swedish before, have listened a little to the Swedish cast recording, but had to give up on it because of the text.
Have been toying with the idea of translating the original Leroux into Swedish, the only existing Swedish translation(s) are based on de Mattos, if I remember correctly and consequently not true to the original. But hearing how archaic and formal some of the Swedish dialogue sounded, made me realize the challenge of transposing 20th C French (a Roman language) into 21st C Swedish (a Germanic language).
Will be back with a full review.
