Re: Love Never Dies - all views allowed
I don't hate it either, I just though it rather bland. I would have imagined something a lot more imaginative from the designer, based on what I've seen of him previously. Hopefully it appears more burlesque and magical live. Or as you suggest, a bit more worn.StrangerThanUDreamt wrote:To be honest it's the closest to an authentic Coney Island look of all the versions staged thus far; I dont hate it, loves the vintage looking prints on the drapes but I do think the colors of the clowns are a bit harsh, I somehow think the original london mask logo, with its muted colors would've looked better at the top, however if they tone down the brightness and age it a bit to look well worn, it could work very well.

The designs for the new Copenhagen production are posted on Facebook. Like 'em?

Re: Love Never Dies - all views allowed
Judging by Facebook, the Copenhagen production is now looking for Gustaves. Anyone willing to audition?
Re: Love Never Dies - all views allowed
They have two Gustaves, still in need of one. They've had a hard time finding a boy looking young and angelic enough, while still having a solid voice.tromp-la-mort wrote:Judging by Facebook, the Copenhagen production is now looking for Gustaves. Anyone willing to audition?
Rehearsals started yesterday in Copenhagen. Just for those curious.

Re: Love Never Dies - all views allowed
Well, it was bound to happen eventually: Christine is apparently the older member of the couple now.
Re: Love Never Dies - all views allowed
Haha you're right LadyCdaee! they should exchange the mask maybe?
I'm joking, it's interesting in a certain way But I'm sad to see that my heroes are not eternal!

Re: Love Never Dies - all views allowed
LOL, is this for real? Because it looks just as tacky as the adverts for the German copycat Phantom starring the far-too-old Deborah Sasson...
I hope the Danish incarnation of this trainwreck throws a few new laughs our way.
Re: Love Never Dies - all views allowed
Oh dear.... Tomas Ambt Kofod, I'm not sure about this... That mask really ain't good, and the dark, heavy clothes and hairdo makes Louise Fribo look like Madame Giry. I hope the design has better things in store than this.
Re: Love Never Dies - all views allowed
So I'm confused ... is the Mask supposed to age along with the Phantom? I mean, that's the only way I can explain those droopy lines under the eye. It's like the thing is melting.
Also, gaaach, it's the danged black beaded necklace that's been used in EVERY photoshoot/magazine/tv show/film ever for anything resembling a Victorian or gothic setting! (... Ok, fine, so I have one too, but I found it at a yard sale for cheap!)

Now imagine them singing "Beneath a Moonless Sky."

Both you and Scorp is gonna kill me, I know, but I rather like that melody. It's just the setting and the lyrics which makes me wanna melt led and pour it into my ears to deal with deafening pain rather than the content of the song.Raphael wrote:operafantomet wrote:Oh dear.... Speaking of which (hahaha) Det Ny Teater released "Till I Hear You Sing" today, with Tomas Ambt Kofod. The beginning is all over the place. The song itself still holds no wow factor for me. I haven't even bothered listen to the Danish lyrics. But I DO like the warmth yet melancholy of Tomas' voice. He always reminded me of Steve Barton.

I wonder if they mean design-wise or if they mean script-wise. I can't see how the former is compatible with the budget and production values of Mr Kenwright if he is indeed the producer.
Re: Love Never Dies - all views allowed
I believe it is both; from the poking around I've done it seems the Aussie version is the version Webber considers the "final" version and thus will be the version to tour the UK and US, I also wouldnt be surprised if they use Anna again for Christine as it would make good timing for when her tenure in Phantom is done.

Re: Love Never Dies - all views allowed
That was my immediate thought as well. Kenwright is known for... if not cheap productions, then at least fairly low-cost ones. I don't see the original Aussie tour being too tourable, except the large tent of Coney Island and a few other elements.Scorp wrote:StrangerThanUDreamt wrote:http://broadwayworld.com/article/Australian-Production-of-LOVE-NEVER-DIES-to-Tour-UK-in-2013-20121004#sthash.Sxz3cKY8.dpbs

That they'll use the Aussie SCRIPT can't be a surprise to anyone.
Re: Love Never Dies - all views allowed
A friend on Livejournal pointed me towards this. LND gets a name check in the 2011 production of The Mikado by Opera Australia:
I've Got A Little List
Just as a warning, it does contain some slightly colourful language.

Re: Love Never Dies - all views allowed
So LND premiered in Copenhagen last night, and the first reviews are in. It's like Australia - they are highly positive, because of local pride. Because they're proud of THEIR country making such a nice version, because of the leads singing the songs better than anyone else, because of the design being spectacular, because of the orchestra making the music soar.
Most reviews comment on the musical not being the best - one even opens with the quote "Love Never Dies isn't amongst the world's best musicals, story or music wise, but even ALW must be thrilled over the production his sequel to POTO has gotten at Det Ny Teater".
So history repeats itself - a wonderful cast and creative team makes the most of sparse material.

Also, apparently RUG announced an upcoming German production of LND to follow the Copenhagen one. And the German is supposed to lead up to the long announced Broadway premiere. We'll see, we'll see....
