Olivier Awards 2011
So... The Olivier Awards 2011. Those I hoped or suspected would win is underlined, while the actual winner is in bold. For many of the categories I haven't seen one single of the productions, therefore I haven't underlined any.
I think the biggest surprise this evening was that "We Will Rock You" won the audience award, and that "Love Never Dies" didn't bring home one single award. I had seriously expected Ramin Karimloo to be one of the winners, and also that they'd get a design award or two. But nope, 7 nominations, no wins whatsoever. That's bad. "After the Dance" winning so much was also a bit of a surprise, I think.

Re: Olivier Awards 2011
The musical-related nominations shows just how dire the state of musical theatre is in the West End right now.
Re: Olivier Awards 2011
Love Never Dies did get some spotlight at the Oliviers though, I find it really sad that my first thought when Sierra stood up out the boat was "Hey! That's the dressing gown from Love Never Dies not Phantom!"

That was my second thought. My first thought was "what's up with that wig?!"

Yes that wig was odd! I think it's the one she wore as Christine!Bot in LND but I'm not entirely sure, I also for a second thought to myself it was perhaps one of her wigs that is normally worn up at the back. Ah the things we notice.

Haha, my initial thought as well, the moment I was the wig from the back.starryeyed wrote:Yes that wig was odd! Yes, the West End certainly is in a lull right now. Only some years ago London was a bit like the holy grail, there were SO many shows I wanted to see, and impossible to pick only two. Now? Meeeh. There's little will to write something entirely new, it seems, which is not based on a movie or a prequel/sequel, or jukebox based. But I think London needs a boost of new, creative writers to come out of this lull. It just can't continue like this, or the West End will die. At least musical production wise. The musical-related nominations shows just how dire the state of musical theatre is in the West End right now.
It's been a fairly exciting year for non-musical theatre, though.
