Ticket Question regarding Broadway
I;ve seen it before but can't for the life of me find the info......
Do they sell box seats, if so how much do they usually go for.
Not seeing any info on this on the ticketing websites, so I assume those are only sold at the box office in person.

Re: The Broadway production + US tour
nice article, and they are so right about the groan when that slip of paper falls out, lol.
Re: The Broadway production + US tour
I don't think I've ever felt that way. I've almost always been excited to see understudies.justin-from-barbados wrote:nice article, and they are so right about the groan when that slip of paper falls out, lol.
Re: The Broadway production + US tour
Well nowadays I get a bit excited, but thats because we have youtube and all that so I already know what the leads sound like, I was actually excited last time I saw the show and got Jason Mills as U/S.
but imagine my dissapointment supposing I was going to see Peter Karrie on my first time and getting his standby and never getting the chance to see Karrie live again, it kinda scarred me for live as far as u/s go, lol.

Re: The Broadway production + US tour
Ah, yeah, that would suck. I guess I've never gone into Phantom really wanting to see the leads (my first time I didn't even know who they would be), so it's only a bonus to get understudies. Sometimes I'm disappointed not to get understudies.justin-from-barbados wrote:Well nowadays I get a bit excited, but thats because we have youtube and all that so I already know what the leads sound like, I was actually excited last time I saw the show and got Jason Mills as U/S.

Re: The Broadway production + US tour
I agree with that - it probably depends on who's doing the roles and how much you'd like to see them. I would also be seriously disappointed if I went to see Peter Karrie and his understudy was on, no matter how good the understudy might be.SenorSwanky wrote:Ah, yeah, that would suck. But in general I love seeing alternates and understudies. Simply because I enjoy seeing different portrayals and feeling the energy they bring to the role.
Re: The Broadway production + US tour
I was a little disappointed by when I went to my first time and saw Randall Keith would be taking Kevin Gray's place that afternoon--but honestly, I was so jazzed about seeing PotO that it didn't matter much in the end. Since then, it does depend on who I expect to see--I would have been heartbroken if I'd wound up with Brad Little or Gary Mauer's understudy, but fate was kind.

I just noticed that as well, it's interesting to see the sorts of angles they get offstage. It's also pretty cool to see how the entire cast and gets ready rather than just the phantom/christine/etc. and to see what goes on backstage with the actors during a show.

I love behind-the-scenes, day-in-the-life stuff like this. It's awesome to know that every Phantom from MC to Cudia has cradled that same monkey during the FL scene.Paula74 wrote:I'm in the middle of lunch so I haven't had a chance to actually look at all of this, but...

Yeah, that's pretty amazing. It doesn't really get a lot of hard use during the show, but still...that is one well-built prop!
Thanks for posting that! The backstage entertainments are particularly amusing (Raoul throwing darts! Mme. Giry knitting with her skirt up around her knees!)

That was a great photo series, loved it! I can't believe they've been using the same monkey since 1988! I would be surprised if that's the case in London...I'm sure I've heard several stories about monkeys getting damaged etc. Plus JOJ pretty much also broke one when I saw him once during the final lair.
Re: The Broadway production + US tour
Aaaaw, I miss John Owen-Jones. For better or worse, he always let his mood show, and when he was on fire he was quite amazing. I can easily imagine him breaking the monkey...
There is a picture on Facebook of the Danish music box. Turns out Firmin and Madame Giry knitted him a blue hood he was wearing when not on stage, so he shouldn't catch a cold... Ha-ha! I think that music box is the same as they used in Sweden. They look very similar. No wonder he needs a knitted hood...

Re: The Broadway production + US tour
I find it ironic in the photo of Ryan Silverman playing darts in his dressing room that there are alcohol bottles behind him on the top shelf. Foreshadowing to the sequel?

2) The show is very expensive to run right now, in part because many members of the company (cast, crew AND orchestra) have been on it so long. Some crew members have been on it since it opened in 92. This is just a ploy to unload those people, recast and rehire, and put the tour back out again in 6 months with a new group on lower salaries with modified tier union contracts. It will also provide an opportunity to replace and/or repair aging elements of the show, like the set pieces and sound system, and update the show to reflect the other flagship productions. For the Phan, you'll see an ever-so-slightly- crummier '4th National Tour' that might be called 'Raoul's Hat' or 'Giry's Cane' or 'The Phantom's Toothbrush', but it will more or less be the same show. They'll probably eliminate the jump set/advance rig, the wrap-around Clark Transfer truck and pack the show even tighter to save money.
I work in the business, and frankly option 2 is not at all far-fetched. It may not be as quick as 6 months, but never fear. As Phans I would not be too upset. The property is still profitable and some new tour will emerge in the not-to-distant future. This is more than likely about reducing running costs (the nut) and raising profits. I give it 5 or 6 years max before another tour emerges. For the record, I do think it will remain a union/equity show. I don't think it has a life non-equity.

I don't know if anyone's mentioned this (I scanned the thread and I didn't see anything), but Tim Martin Gleason and Kim Stengel did an interview on Good Morning Texas, and it mentioned a scaled-down tour is already in the works.

Re: The Broadway production + US tour
I can't imagine how they can scale it down and still maintain the Broadway quality they always tout.
Re: The Broadway production + US tour
Does this mean the Tour really was closed because of monetary reasons?phantomphan1992 wrote:ravnquest1 wrote:Hey guys..

Re: The Broadway production + US tour
Oh, I'm pretty sure it can. Not costume wise, but the technical aspect can probably be reworked so they come up with simpler solutions than before. Much has happened since the POTO sets first was worked out in the 80's. Cameron Mackintosh seems determined still that the US tours of his shows shall be full Broadway quality (as in the "Mary Poppins" tour), so I don't think the show will "cheapen" in any way.SenorSwanky wrote:I can't imagine how they can scale it down and still maintain the Broadway quality they always tout.
Glad to hear they're working on it. I just... can't imagine a world without a US tour of Phantom...

I'm glad, too...it means they're not closing it as part of some nefarious plot to drive the reluctant phans to Love Never Dies.
Re: The Broadway production + US tour
Of course it was monetary reasons. No way CamMac, Alan Wasser, et al, cede ground to a production that hasn't even quite opened in London, let alone Broadway, a production they're not involved with.
As far as ways to scale down the production, I can't think what could actually be made cheaper to run. If you think about it, the main costs are in labor (cast, pit, all the crew involved in setting up and maintaining the sets and costumes on a daily basis) and transportation (all those semi trucks that have to transport the sets and costumes hundreds of miles a month) and other sunk costs that are necessary to bring Maria Bjornson's designs to life. The only way to reduce those costs is to reduce the number of laborers (cast, crew, musicians) or the number of costumes and set pieces or go to non-Equity labor. They may find marginal cost reductions if there are technological improvements in actually delivering the set pieces onstage or in lighting (though they did just update the lighting to modern technology a few years ago). My fear is fewer musicians and more canned music. I know they use it in Vegas, but part of that is also keeping the show to a set time.
