100 years of Phantom!
Just to spread the word, this Wednesday will mark the 100th anniversary of the appearance of the first installment of Gaston Leroux's Le Fantôme de l'Opéra in Le Gaulois, the French paper in which the novel was initially serialised prior to publication in book format the following year in 1910.
To celebrate this achievement and to coincide with the beginning of Phantom Fans' Week in Las Vegas, a brand new Phantom Twitter stream has been launched to spread the word of the centenary and the latest news and developments concerning the Opera Ghost. Eventually it is hoped the stream will be used to release exciting new ongoing research currently being undertaken into the novel and all its subsequent adaptations (including, of course, the Lloyd Webber musical) in areas never previously explored. The more fans who join the stream, the better, so we can spread word of the centenary to the wider world and draw attention to all things Phantom!

Re: 100 years of Phantom!
Thanks for announcing this!
Guys, today's the day!!! (Wednesday, that is). Exactly 100 years ago, the first installment of Leroux's novel appeared in serialisation in Le Gaulois. This is the officially the beginning of the centenary celebrations, continuing into next year. Time to be incredibly geeky and celebrate!!!
Come on, I can't be the only one to have geeky tendencies around here. Can we all do stupid things like wear Phantom clothes/watch Phantom films all day/read the book/drop chandeliers/build hexagonal mirrored rooms/punjab people to mark the occasion?
Failing that, just join the Twitter stream. Leroux's grandson is watching it, would be good to show how many people there are who heart Leroux and his novel!
Happy 100th birthday, dear old, noseless, rotting Phantom!

Wow! Oh yeah, totally geeking with you on this one! Ok, so I'm a bit late in my time-zone. But what the Heck! I hope we all find lots of fun, celebratory things to do this year!

I myself had a terrific Phantom "birthday party" myself. I baked a Phantom cake and everything for the ocassion. It was great fun!
Re: 100 years of Phantom!
To celebrate Phantom's 100th anniversary, the writers board I belong to ran a little contest. Folks were asked write short ficlets and/or drabbles on the theme of Erik's birthday. It was a lot of fun and the entries ran the gamut from morbid to *smexy.* It was a lot of fun, and I even volunteered to put the entries together into a small book form and make it available on my Lulu storefront. We figured we could buy copies of our stories and give them to friends and family members for Christmas presents! And we'll use whatever money we make to help pay for maintenance of our board.

Re: 100 years of Phantom!
Gaston Leroux's Le Fantôme de l'Opéra was originally published post-serialisation by Pierre Lafitte in February 1910.
It's now February 2010.
Party time!!
^ Pic of the front cover of my copy of the first ed.
And no, sadly I don't know the exact date in February it came out...no-one seems to know and I don't have sufficient info to work off. I'll let people know if/when I find out.

Re: 100 years of Phantom!
Wow! So for once I might actually not be totally behind on something! Awesome! And totally happy birthday to Erik! And many happy returns!
P.S. At one point there was a pdf-file version of the Leroux novel in French floating around, and I used to have it. But then my computer crashed and I lost not only it but the URL where I got it. Does anyone know where I can find it? I'd buy it, and in fact I do own a print copy (sadly not first ed). But since I'd only end up having to scan it into e-text in order to be able to read it anyway, and my scanner would *totally* screw up any attempt at rendering my poor paperback copy, I figure it'd just be better to get it in pre-prepared e-text! So if anyone can help I'd be most grateful! LOL I don't know if my French is entirely up to reading it, but I'm dying to try!

I have a PDF of the original text on my comp somewhere...but it might take a while for me to find it. In the meantime, you can read it electronically chapter by chapter on Wikisource:

(Copy paste the link cos it doesn't seem to work).
Re: 100 years of Phantom!
Thanks Scorp! If you can find the pdf I'd be gigantically grateful! And in the mean time, I'll try that one!
Thanks again!
