Since it's the year of the 25th anniversary of POTO in London, and Broadway POTO is beating the crap out of the international POTO site on Facebook, I thought I would do something similar to the Bway site here. I really can't tell from that semi-big photo. I think they look so much alike! They're both dark "Ken handsome" guys. John Barrowman joined in December 1991, I think, so it can very well be him.

Thank you, London-Phan! About the () Phantoms - when did they start featuring the standby Phantoms? I know the first couple of playbills don't have a standby one, rather they list understudies. Steve Barton and James Patterson were understudy for the role, weren't they? I'm not quite sure when they added the standby position.

I'm not sure why they started having a standby, i think they started in '91 or could have possibly been '90 because thats when James Patterson left so maybe that's when they started with the standby. Before that they seemed to just have regular understudies.

Here's a small tidbit I just ran across:

Patricia (Merrin) was an original member of the London cast of ‘Phantom of the Opera’ as dancer, dance- captain, understudy to Madame Giry (acting singing role) and then went on to be assistant choreographer and assistant resident director.

Mary Millar, John Aron, Rosemary Ashe, Rebecca Caine, Janet Devenish and the rest of the 1987 London cast in rehearsals. I spot Maria Kesselman in the background too, in Princess costume! Who's the other Princess? And the dresser/seamstress?

And you can say what you want, all of you, but the original Elissa costume kicks ass. It does! Period.

The picture comes from the re-released "Phantom, first year backstage" book by Markus Tylor. It's filled with rare backstage and onstage pictures of the original production and cast members, and some funny anecdotes. But whereas the first was a rather grainy sales catalogue in quality, the new one has glossy pages and also several pages of colour photos. Devon has written more about it here:
