I know! Me too. It sounded really good. The church and graveyard setting isn't something I ever thought of with that particular scene. I always pictured it in the middle of night, him on a dark road, lost in his own dark thoughts. But yes, symbolic.

Re: Les Misérables
Me too! I always envisioned the song taking place during the night at a crossroads (again, symbolic). But thinking it over, daytime does fit the chronology of events (invited to spend the night at the bishop's house, stealing the silver in the wee hours, then getting caught and returned in the morning).

Re: Les Misérables
Musically, though, he gets caught right away, so I wonder how they'll transition from night to day. Maybe they have him stealing the silver as the sun is coming up rather than right when the bishop goes to bed.
Re: Les Misérables
These pictures are making me even more excited to see this...and I really love the fact that they seem to be drawing a lot from the book itself for Valjean's look. I've never really liked the whole "caveman" look of the prisoners on stage, though I can understand why they do that.
And, adding to my excitement is the fact that it's just been announced the tour will be coming back here next season...to the same theatre where I saw Les Miz for the very first time.

They use a filter over the lens to darken it, and it will give the illusion of night. It used to be done a lot in movies in the 50s, 60s, 70s.
They did it a lot with the Sean Connery Bond movies. I want to say Thunderball used this a lot especially when they are on a boat. It's easy to spot. If you can see clouds and no stars, then it's a day-to-night shot.

Yeah, that could be what they're doing (though I doubt we'll know for sure until the film comes out, unless they release promo clips/photos from that scene after it's edited). They also did it recently in Peter Jackson's King Kong remake, with the scene in the pit of giant insects. In that case, though, they used computer editing after the fact rather than a lens filter, to make sure the cameras could capture every detail.

Re: Les Misérables
Cool. I bet that's what they're doing. Seems rather bright for the mood and setting of the song. Are they filming this digitally or with actual film? I hope the latter.
Re: Les Misérables
Do film cameras still require a lot (and I mean a LOT) of light to get a good shot? If so, then there's a possibility that the way they were filming this, with just the natural light will not be as bright as what we're shown, especially after processing.
I don't know if they're filming digitally or not. Anyone know if The King's Speech was filmed digitally? That may give an idea how this one will be filmed.
I kind of assume not, since film gives a piece a warmer feel as opposed to filming digitally which makes a piece seem colder.

Re: Les Misérables
I just stumbled onto this... It's a short clip of Jackman filming a couple of takes for "Valjean's Soliloquy." Not great audio, but you can kind of hear him singing the last note.
Re: Les Misérables
Oh, whoops... I assumed everyone had just been talking about the photos. Ah well, everyone about your business... you know the rest.
Re: Les Misérables
He better give a good rendition of Stars. That's all I'm gonna say when it comes to Russell.

Re: Les Misérables
A short video clip of Russell Crowe as Javert has come out, posted by the same account that posted the Jackman clip. No sound on this one, but still pretty cool.
Also, it seems from Hugh Jackman's Twitter that whatever diet he was on to look that thin and ragged for the Prologue is over... Meanwhile, Anne Hathaway is apparently beginning her own crash diet to portray Fantine's physical deterioration. Looks like they're going all-out for this film.

With all this excitement over the upcoming film. I was getting back into Les Miserables when I found out that the Teatr Roma in Warsaw Poland put on a Les Miserables.
Say what you will about their Phantom, This production of Les Miserables looks spectacular.
Here's some clips.

Those sets do look impressive. Love the prologue concept. That Fantine is adorable.
The audio on that flashmob was obviously pre-recorded (probably dubbed over them actually singing in person). And evidently whoever plays Enjolras is a teen heartthrob in Poland.

What a great advertising idea. That flashmob was awesome.
Would so love to see other shows try something like that.
Hopefully there's a cast recording of them. They sounded awesome.

Re: Les Misérables
There is actually. It's quite a good cast album. Sadly, due to the licence restrictions it can only be sold in the theatre itself or through their Internet website (here: http://teatrroma.pl/sklep/) t's got about 20 tracks, "Turning" and "Drink with me" included (it beats me how anyone can put "Turning" on a CD and not "Come to me" and "Confrontation")

Re: Les Misérables
How's this for irony? Rebecca Caine went to go teach her students today, but was told she was blocked from entering because of a film set. Guess what for? I'm not sure the builder who told her she couldn't go through believed her story about being the original Cosette...
Here is a picture she took of the set:
In case you're wondering what that is, it's a lifesize replica of the Bastille Elephant, which actually existed in Paris at the time of the novel's setting, and, moreover, is home to Gavroche in Hugo's novel.
I'm so impressed with the historical accuracy. If only a certain hack director had bothered with that in HIS film of a certain other musical....

Re: Les Misérables
Wow. How surreal. Hope she eventually got to visit the set.
And I also love the historical accuracy and bringing in things from the novel.

Re: Les Misérables
I went to see the tour of Les Miserables yesterday. Overall, I enjoyed it and the cast! The stand outs had to be Andrew Valera as Javert and Betsy Morgan as Fantine. The new sets really breathe life into the show. As does the new staging/blocking, too! I think, not only does it make the novel come alive, but gives the characters far more depth. One scene I did like in particular was the relationship between Gavroche and Grantaire (and his lack of disinterest towards fighting on the barricade). When Gavroche dies, you can see that from that moment on, he wants to fight for his name. There was a whole bunch of other things I enjoyed and I could go on forever. But I just thought I'd share my experience here.
Oh, the orchestrations are gorgeous as well. Little things here and there I missed, but it sounded so beautiful and it really complemented what I was watching on the stage.

Re: Les Misérables
They must be filming the Lovely Ladies and Fantine's Death scenes now or imminently because Anne Hathaway has chopped her hair off: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/04/09/anne-hathaway-haircut_n_1412075.html
She seems very self-conscious about it.

Did you see Jason Forbach as Enjolras? He just took over the role during the last cast change. He started out playing Feuilly when the show opened. We're so proud of him.ML6 wrote:I went to see the tour of Les Miserables yesterday. Overall, I enjoyed it and the cast! The stand outs had to be Andrew Valera as Javert and Betsy Morgan as Fantine. Was Jason Forbach ever a Raoul? His name rings a bell, specifically a Vegas bell in my head. I feel he might have been my Raoul when I saw the Vegas production of Phantom in the summer of 2007.
