Hey, I'm not sure if this should go here or on the random board, but it's related to a phic I'm writing so I'll take my chances here.. Anyway, I'm hoping someone with a better knowledge of French (ie., more than what can be gleaned from Babelfish) can help me out with something. I'm looking for a good, not-too-obviously-modern French "pet name" that a man might call his young granddaughter. And also for an informal form of address for one's grandfather--I got grand-papa out of Babelfish, but I'm not sure how well that works...

Thanks in advance,

~LCD

Well, apart from your standard 'cushy' nicknames just translated into French (babe, darling, etc.) the only pet name I've ever heard that is distinctly French is 'mon petit chou.' Translated it basically means 'my little cabbage', but seems to be popular with the French as a term of endearment for loved ones. (Actually, according to a conversation I found on this topic, the word 'chou' could well be derived from 'choyer', which means cherish or pamper. Which fits way better).

Otherwise:

mon cheri (my darling)
bebe (babe; baby)
mon ange (my angel)

Does that help at all?

For grandfather I grew up with Pepere. I can't get the accents to show up on my netbook but if you Google it you'll see how it's suppose to look.

Pepere--I like that; I've been looking for something that would have the same feel as "Pop-pop" or the like. Thanks!
