Phantom Props! + Hey I'm new!!
Hey everyone!!
First things first I'm new so hey all! Very excited to join the community, I do personally think this site is miles better than the POTO forum.
And now down to the business, I am a connoisseur of stage used props and I am most interested (okay, obsessed) in the masks and the red death. Of course if anyone was prepared to sell anything, especially masks and red death, then please send me a message as I would love some props as I have none, but please post any props you have on here, not necessarily for sale but out of interest. Props are very interesting to here about, and ideally see, so please come forward with your props! Another thing, there was a guy on ebay who sold a Peter Karrie's double mask, a Peter Karrie Red Death Mask and the masquerade man/woman mask all from the 2000 UK tour, I believe his ebay name was stage_starr. If he is on here or anyone knows how to contact him, please say as I would love to make contact.
And finally, I don't know how this keeper thing works, but I would like:
Keeper of- Mark McKerracher's crazy fire cane work in wandering child
Sofia Escobar's beautiful voice
JOJ's MOTN and PONR
London production
The masks of the London production
Hope to have started a good thread,
thanks!

If by "the masks" you mean the Phantom's masks, those are very hard to come by. The US tour used to lock them up every night after the show, so unless you played the Phantom the odds of you having one are slim- and I don't even know if the actors get to keep them.

Welcome to the forum, I think you will like it here...the people are nice and there is always something interesting to talk about. :-) I'm not sure how to contact this seller on Ebay but do remember it being listed. The best advice I have for you is to be patient (I know, it's hard!!) and check Ebay listings constantly!! I have seen a couple authentic Phantom masks pop up on UK's Ebay also. Good luck and I hope you are able to add these to your collection someday!! :-)

The masks are rare for sure. I don't know if all principal Phantoms keep their masks but I know some keep theirs. Peter Karrie definitely still has his. His saying is "Have mask, will travel". Colm Wilkinson said in a recent interview that he kept his..although he's not sure where it went to.
They were both early Phantom so I wonder if newer ones like TMG were able to keep theirs. Hope so!
phanfullerton - As with what others have said, I hope you enjoy it here. It's a great bunch of fans and we tend to get along very well. Welcome!

Re: Phantom Props! + Hey I'm new!!
Also, sometimes the masks are offered during the annual Broadway Cares grand auction. Not every year, but I've definitely seen it happen...for example, the mask that Howard wore for the record-breaking performance in New York was auctioned that way.
It's once in a blue moon...but definitely another possibility to watch for.

Re: Phantom Props! + Hey I'm new!!
I wish RUG would just sell replicas of the various mask designs. Do you realize how much money they'd make off that?

Hello!
Welcome to the forum! Make sure you go through the costumes thread for pics of props/masks. There are some pics of things in there. Good luck with your quest!

Hey all! Thanks all for the welcomes!!!
Out of interest phantomfett, the masks you keep with the hats, like the wandering child hat mask, are they real or are they good replicas? And please everyone, post your props! And I don't mean for sale, I just mean out of intrest, for people to see!
And does anyone know if the Timmons still have props/costumes left as they were selling them some time ago, and I would be very interested, and I have tried contacting them, but haven't heard anything yet.
Kind Regards,
OG

Hey there,
I own two props from the Broadway POTO collection, a chair and wedding bouquet that Christine uses in the final lair scene. I have pictures posted on my website here if you are interested: http://devonsdomain.yolasite.com/misc-poto-memorabilia.php
Also regarding the Timmons, I have contacted Jeff and Rebecca before and they said their items have been sold. But hey, just keep trying to get in touch with them! I know they are busy busy people but I'm sure they will get back to you. :-)
Re: Phantom Props! + Hey I'm new!!
A chair....that is the only one of those I've seen in the hands of a fan. Nice score!
The masks are real. Ebay has been kind.

Thank you phantomfett! I feel very lucky I was able to nab that on Ebay! I think I won it back in 2008 actually. Probably my most prized Phantom possession!

In case anyone is interested, there will be one more of those chairs for sale tomorrow at the flea market. I didn't catch what the price for that item would be, I would guess not cheap, but if someone is going and would like me to hold it for them...

I can appreciate obsessive, but unfortunately I don't have any closer up pics that I can provide. The masks had initials in them, but they were covered over with marker. Sorry.

Re: Phantom Props! + Hey I'm new!!
thats a shame, still awesome though!!! The wandering child hat mask looks very panaro to me. Remember, if you were ever to sell any, you know who to message!phantomfett wrote:I can appreciate obsessive, but unfortunately I don't have any closer up pics that I can provide. In other news, a recent lead has arisen to me involving a possible current JOJ mask...
king regards to all,

Re: Phantom Props! + Hey I'm new!!
Anyone know what happened to various red death costumes, eg: timothy nolan, he had an awsome suit!
any ideas?
ps: Anyone have more pictures of Mark Mckerracher as phantom apart from the 2 on his site and that other one, and does anyone have pictures of all the english red deaths (or most) as I need more English red death pictures, and also, I think they should bring back the original RD jaw in London, I don't like the broken look so much,
kind regards

The American suits are in storage.
Why do you need pics of every English RD? The jaw on the masks hasn't changed, to my knowledge. How they fit the actors varies from person to person.

Re: Phantom Props! + Hey I'm new!!
the current london one has a sort of broken jaw and is permanently open, just opening more each time, and I prefer the classics. I have found a few of the london red deaths, and I am ttrying to make a little sort of archive of some of my favourite costumes, but there are many I have not found, I think they are these: Willets, Karrie, Freeman, McKerracher, Sterling, Davies, JOJ (original), Carpenter, Shannon.phantomfett wrote:The American suits are in storage.

I'm 99% sure that it's the same style mask. It just fits people differently. I've got one of the English RD masks and it looks very much like both the current and older ones....

Re: Phantom Props! + Hey I'm new!!
I would tend to agree, but the original JOJ one fitted properly like you Peter Karrie one, and the new one looked very different when I saw it in london.phantomfett wrote:I'm 99% sure that it's the same style mask. Re: Phantom Props! + Hey I'm new!!
There have actually been issues with the Red Death mask(s) in London in recent years. Why I don't know. But the mask(s) has had a gaping mouth and apparently the jaw has not been able to move when the Phantom is singing. It looks silly. Think this, only more gaping, and not moving though the Phantom is singing (year playback, but we're not supposed to know that):phantomfett wrote:I'm 99% sure that it's the same style mask. Re: Phantom Props! + Hey I'm new!!
it is a real shame as London has always had the best red deaths in my opinion and the new ones look wrong, I wonder if Scott Davies' one is the same

Re: Phantom Props! + Hey I'm new!!
I would think a gaping jaw like you describe would be a relatively simple fix by tightening or replacing the elastic. Shame if that hasn't been done.

I'm not sure who held the bouquet as I'm not totally sure what year this prop is from. But if anyone knows let me know! ;-)
Re: Phantom Props! + Hey I'm new!!
There's a chin cup inside of the jaw on the UK masks. If you put the cup under your chin, it fits like the wide open version that doesn't move. If the chin is seated properly, it will move as advertised and the jaw will close. Things that can affect this are jaw length, face shape, etc....keep in mind that the RD masks are not generally custom fitted, especially when the masks are so dang expensive. I guarantee you that the jaw issue is a very simple fix.

Re: Phantom Props! + Hey I'm new!!
Yeah, why they allow the West End Red Death mask to be as it is (I think it's still gaping). The mouth moves somewhat, but the starting position is still a big grin, so you barely see it. I'm tempted to think it's a construction flaw with the newest mask, and that they just don't think the detail important enough to make a new mask. I don't know if it's fixed now, but it wasn't when I saw it back in December 2009. By then it had been like that for some years. Very, very strange.
Anyway... I know some fans scored cool stuff at the Broadway flea market. Including a Don Juan goblet and an apron from the Il Muto ballet costumes! I am so jealous!
