Big Finish Radio Dramatisation Airing on BBC Radio 7
Anna Massey and Peter Guinness star in Gaston Leroux’s classic story of love, murder and a ghostly presence at the Paris Opera House. Directed by dramatist Barnaby Edwards.
Tuesday - Friday at 6pm and Midnight - http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00b5p8r
Listen online @ http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio7/ (not sure whether it's available to those outside the UK...can anyone check?). You can listen online on demand as well, not just when it is actually aired.
From Wikipedia: The Phantom of the Opera (2007): Originally aired December 2007 on BBC7, written and directed by Barnaby Edwards for Big Finish Productions. The four-part dramatization is the first to feature the original operatic sequences described in the novel, which have been recorded and orchestrated by composer Tim Sutton. The play features Anna Massey, Peter Guinness, Alexander Siddig and James D’Arcy.
Official 'blurb': In the cosmopolitan Paris of the 1880s, the new proprietors of the Opera House are amused to discover that their costly acquisition is said to be haunted. But their smiles quickly vanish, as tragedy follows misfortune: a murdered stagehand, a fatal accident, a missing girl. Fearful tales of the Opera Ghost race through the corridors and dressing rooms of the theatre. And with good reason - for deep in the catacombs beneath the Opera House, something is stirring...
I gave Episode 1 a listen on my iPod whilst falling asleep last night, and it's not bad at all. Quite keen to hear the rest at some point.

If you miss out on hearing the episodes on BBC Radio, you can also buy the finished product as a 2CD set (see the website). I'm tempted once I have a bit more £££...

Or not... . The Swedish radio broadcasting company did a 30 episode (each episode was 15 minutes) dramatization in 1990 and it also featured at least quite a few of the operatic sequences. It was very good. I have it on five tapes, I should get them digitilized.
I'm quite interested in hearing this though and might buy it.

Peter Guinness
Is he related to the 'late' Alec Guinness? I have a feeling he is.
