Re: Rare pictures 2
Why is that?operafantomet wrote:This would mostly be due to the Swedish production not playing during summer. Musical productions in Scandinavia rarely do, alas.
I think a lot of the conductors have done obscene amounts of performances, haven't they? I know the usual one on Broadway (Brian Lai?) was doing the show I saw in October 2005 and then the one I saw back in July, almost six years apart.ETA: any word on the conductor from Stockholm and Copenhagen - Per Engström - in the brochure? He has conducted some 1600 performances, it's definitely impressive!
Re: Rare pictures 2
If they played the summer though maybe the wouldn't have had such a problem with the dry ice, I remember reading that because it was the most northern production so far it was always too cold for the dry ice to work properly.
Re: Rare pictures 2
That must be a rumour more than anything. Oslo is about the same latitude as Stockholm, and climate hardly affects how dry ice react indoors here. Copenhagen, albeit a tad more south, didn't have such issues either. I would rather think Vegas, with their ice-wind air conditioning system, would struggle more.justin-from-barbados wrote:If they played the summer though maybe the wouldn't have had such a problem with the dry ice, I remember reading that because it was the most northern production so far it was always too cold for the dry ice to work properly.
As for why theatres don't perform during summer? Beats me. Main reason is probably that most theatres are government supported. They have a permanent staff (including actors), which are entitled to vacations corresponding with say an office worker. July and August are basically always dark. Though I would guess the lack of theatre tourists probably is a part of the reason as well.
Re: Rare pictures 2
If you work for the government in Oslo, you get a two-month vacation every year? Sign me up! I accumulate a day a month.

No, why would that be a problem? The theatre isn't cold. I think however that they did struggle a bit with the dry ice in the beginning, but that wasn't because Sweden is particularily cold. It had something to do with the ventilation system in the theatre if I remember correctly, but they sorted it. It wasn't anything you noticed during the shows anyway. At least I didn't.

I think it has more to do with the Scandinavian tradition that you want to spend most of your summer outdoors and not inside. People leave the city and go out to the country during summer (traditionally I mean, not everyone does it these days) so there is less audience. I think people want to see shows in the summer too, but we like them performed outdoors so you can bring your picnic while watching the show. Going to the Opera house or private theatres is more of a winter thing here.

Hey Swanky,SenorSwanky wrote:It's the same as his Toronto one. I've got a BBC Wales documentary of his time in the Vancouver leg of the tour. And weren't some of those shots (the lantern one, in particular) used in the legs of the tour he did in Canada, Hong Kong, and Singapore? If not, his mask was the same for those shots.
Is there any way of watching this documentary online? I've always wanted to learn more about the Vancouver production.

Re: Rare pictures 2
I don't think it's online, no. I have it on VHS, so I couldn't even rip it and put it online if I wanted to.
Re: Rare pictures 2
No, not at all. But to close a theatre for the season, and to prepare it for the next season, would take a couple of weeks. This will typically happen 1-3 weeks after and before the season. And in between they have one month vacation, like ordinary people. In effect they don't perform for an audience for 2 to 2,5 months. But only one of these months is vacation.SenorSwanky wrote:If you work for the government in Oslo, you get a two-month vacation every year?
Speaking of RARE pictures.... Any pictures of Anna Maria Kaufmann (original Hamburg Christine) apart from those in the original Hamburg brochure? Or actually, any good scans of that one too would be welcome. I have it, but it's so shiny and hard to photograph the pictures in it...
Re: Rare pictures 2
Still, even a one-month vacation would be nice. We need more vacation time in the US.
Re: Rare pictures 2
OK, this was a lot funnier in the actual screening than in a picture, but still.... The... erm... different reactions of Cameron Mackintosh and Andrew Lloyd Webber when Peter Jöback started his line in MOTN. Whereas Mackintosh grinned and applauded and almost jumped up and down, ALW looked very worried. And "forgot" to clap. I am very curious if that moment will make it into the DVD...
Re: Rare pictures 2
Gareth Snook almost looks as if he's thinking "Ah...oh" in that picture and there's a female ensemble member to the left of shot who looks rather worried!

I will re-watch that sequence when I get the DVD. I couldn't take my eyes of ALW/Cam M. They were yin and yang that moment.starryeyed wrote:Gareth Snook almost looks as if he's thinking "Ah...oh" in that picture and there's a female ensemble member to the left of shot who looks rather worried!
OK.... What about a collage of the famous MOTN pose?
Or the less famous YSSDG (You Smell So Darn Good) pose?
In that first collage: Peter Jorde & Hanne Damm, Juan Navarro & Irasema Terrazas,
In the second collage: I wanna say

Re: Rare pictures 2
Pretty sure it's Hugh and Raab in the top left of the second collage, and I believe it's Jacoby and Culliver in both of the last two on the bottom right. Definitely Culliver in both. Can't tell the dark face of the Phantom in the b & w one. I don't think Hilsabeck and Culliver ever performed together. Could possibly be Kevin Gray.

As far as I'm aware, Hye Kyoung Lee was only in the original (2002) Korean cast, not the 2009 revival (though if anyone knows she was in the '09 cast, I stand corrected). The 2 main Christines in the 2009 cast were So-Hyun Kim and Hyun-Ju Choi, and I think they split the role evenly, as did the 2 main Phantoms in that cast.
Not sure who the actress in the photo is, though. (Oddly, almost every mention I see online of Korean performers in POTO has their names spelled completely differently -- perhaps there isn't a standard way of romanizing Korean names like there is for Japanese -- so my spelling may or may not be correct.)
Re: Rare pictures 2
Reason why I ask is that I have a tiny picture of one which was either the alternate or the understudy Christine from the original Korean production. All I remember is that part of her name was Kim... But that goes for more than one Korean... Here's the picture I have:

Paul Stanley
It's from one of the latest Kiss documentaries made by CNN. Paul shows the reporter his dressing/make-up room and this photo hangs by his mirror.

Re: Rare pictures 2
yup, that's the toronto makeup, was the first show I saw and I was up front, was NOT expecting it to be that intense. But you must remember that the last row in the Pantages is almost twice as far back as the last rows in London or NYC so they had to amp it up.

I made that screencap and posted it in the Toronto thread last week. Is it passing around the Internet now?
