He actually did it. Part of me was hoping I'd underestimated ALW, but no--he really re-re-purposed "The Heart Is Slow to Learn/Our Kind of Love" for this travesty. Epic fail.

I always hated that song on the old 50th birthday concert (which is otherwise full of great performances (minus a few *ahem*AntonioBanderasinthetitlesong*ahem*)). These lyrics are just dreadful, and the melody is just so generic, reminiscent of You Must Love Me.
Re: Love Never Dies - all views allowed
I actually really like "The Heart is Slow to Learn". I went to the "Beautiful Game" in London just so I could hear "Our Kind of Love" and I really like that version too.
Now this one? Not liking it so much. I can't understand all the words and the ones I do get are kind of uninspiring. (In my opinion)
It was interesting hearing Sierra sing it though. It doesn't sound like her "Christine voice" from when I saw her in the Vegas production.

At least he can hold notes, unlike Gerard.
But, yeah. That's what I thought - anybody could sing that song. And not only that, is she implying that the 'heart(s) will be broken' is Raoul? Because good lord, what a skanky ho. Raoul gave her a lot of stuff: a child (yes or no?), money, clothes, food, a bed, house to sleep in, and a title. All because of her stupid decisions after ten years, and this god awful song, she's proving to be more sluttier than Eva Peron.
This is just too rich.

Re: Love Never Dies - all views allowed
I'm lazy, so I'll just repeat myself here:
For a long time I assumed that Andrew Lloyd-Webber was bursting with wonderful new songs to share with the world. Why else would he insist on making a Phantom sequel?
Then I heard some of the actual music, and thought "WTF?!?"
And now I'm just.... appalled. Yes, Sierra Boggess looks like a million dollar. And she sings so much better her than in her Vegas days, fantastic voice. The high notes/verse towards the end seemed strangely misplaced, but that's not her fault.
But the song. THE SONG! THAT song. Again. And again. And so freakin' dull. I felt like crying when I watched it, because even though I've been negative to the whole affaire for a long time, I still hoped the title song would be somewhat glowing. And he gave us trash. I know recycling trash is good for the environment, but PUH-leeease!

Re: Love Never Dies - all views allowed
I'm surprised at myself but I don't think this was too bad. I think it is definately the best of what I've heard so far from LSD (the other two pieces being really horrendous). And I didn't even like this song before. I thought it was rather dull and over the top when Kiri Te Kanawa sang it, so maybe it is Sierra who manages to do something here that makes me think it is alright. I was fully prepared to hate it, is confused now... . Still definately don't like the idea of Christine singing a heartfelt love song to the Phantom. It's a horrible way to treat the story and Raoul, and Christine's character too for that matter. So in that sense, the song feels pointless, but I thought it was rather beautiful in itself.
Re: Love Never Dies - all views allowed
Well Sierra was lovely. That song however was not. Lyrics were dull, flat, and lifeles. I actually like the tune when it was to "The Hear Is Slow To Learn", but now, I may vomit.
Re: Love Never Dies - all views allowed
Parrts of The Heart is Slow to Learn did grow on me a bit in subsequent viewings, but probably mostly due to Kiri te Kanawa's voice. Sierra has a nice voice, but it doesn't transform the song beyond its mediocrity like te Kanawa's did.
Re: Love Never Dies - all views allowed
I agree that you could drop the chorus and easily insert "You Must Love Me" but I prefer the tune of the verses in "Our Kind of Love" over this one.
but overall I am still being optimistic.

Re: Love Never Dies - all views allowed
Y'know, I was looking forward to seeing this video clip when I first heard about it, but now that I know it's a recycled-recycled-tune, and a tune that I was never all that fond of to begin with, I'm just not interested anymore. Twelve years, and he really couldn't come up with a truly new song for this?
I'm still waiting to see any sign of this genius ALW's-best-in-years score that Baz keeps raving about.

We know about "The Heart is Slow to Learn" and "Our Kind of Love" and now "Love Never Dies" but did you know there is a fourth version of the song? Yup. It stays close to "The Heart is Slow to Learn" both in melody and lyrics. Sorry I don't have a recording but here are the lyrics:
The man is slow to learn
The man is slow to learn
These songs that I hear
Are foolish but they’re real
I’m wise enough to see
This show should never be
When each song sounds like the last,
When one's living for cash.
I know it’s mad and the ghost should not return
But then, as I have said,
The man is slow to learn
I'll never know how after Phans have loved you
Why is Webber cruel?
I wish I knew!
Say what Phans will, it doesn’t matter
Love Never Dies, there will be Phantom 2.
Love Never Dies, there will be Phantom 2.
The man is slow to learn,
The man is slow to learn
You’d think there’d be a way
To shut out this play.
Perhaps Andy's just thought
Of all past tickets folks bought...
Otto tried to but no,
There’s still going to be a show
I know it’s mad and the ghost should not return
But then, as I have said, The man is slow to learn
Why is Webber cruel?
I wish I knew!
Say what Phans will,
It doesn’t matter
Love Never Dies, there will be Phantom 2
Love Never Dies, there will be Phantom 2
Why is Andrew cruel?
I wish I knew!

It doesn’t matter

Love Never Dies, there will be Phantom 2
The man is slow to learn to Learn.
- Anéa I saw your FB status update with the line "The man is slow to learn" and I couldn't help but write the rest of the song to go with it.

Brilliant.
Now, keep in mind, MOTN was a recycled song, but its melody was so much better, and it fit so much better into Phantom than I think this song does. It sounds more like something from Jeeves or Woman in White. It's just not the sort of memorable, sweeping, romantic, melodic, passionate songs we're used to from ALW's best work.

The song bored me and I hate to say it, I've never been a fan of Sierra's voice but it just seems even worse in this video. But maybe I'll blame that on the song making her sound worse.

I like Sierra's voice but...meh.. the song is just not interesting. After a few lines I'm not interested in listening any further.

I'm still a little fuzzy on this, but I think "Married Man" was something that had been cut or put on the reject pile prior to PotO being written--in which case re-using the melody for MotN was a lot less cheesy. "Our Kind of Love" has been part of The Beautiful Game for at least a decade--re-using it now just proves how creatively bankrupt ALW has become in recent years.

Re: Love Never Dies - all views allowed
I agree, even though basically only the chorus was used in Beautiful Game, for a title song he should come up with something new, even though the song was originally for the sequel, but I dont have an issue with him using it, because it was written for the sequel, just not for something that is usually as important and presumably iconic as a title song.
But we all know that ALW likes to reuse his own stuff and as an artist while it may not be totally original, atleast it is his music to reuse.
Anyone else that listened to beautiful game hear the whole instrumental section that was used in Woman in White? and there is the whole bridge from a song from Jeaves that ended up in Sunset.
I think he should know that people expect more for a title song and he could have kept this melody for another part of the show, even for some connecting material.

Meh. Didn't capture my imagination at all.
*sighs* This is the title track?
Re: Love Never Dies - all views allowed
Yawn. I'm not even passionately against this particular development. Just bored by it. Sierra's gorgeous, but that's not news to anyone. I've never much cared for the tune, I don't think it fits POTO at all, and the lyrics could hardly be duller.
Re: Love Never Dies - all views allowed
I'm not sure, but I think Married Man was in a version of Tell Me on a Sunday that Sarah Brightman filmed for a British TV version.LadyCDaae wrote:SenorSwanky wrote: Brilliant.

I've said this elsewhere and I'll say it again here: just because ALW recycles often, doesn't excuse what is nothing more than pure laziness here. He's had well over a decade to write a new tune for the Phantom sequel, yet obviously he can't be bothered. Yes, he's recycled before, but I can't think of any other time when he's stuck a song that's already been recorded on the cast album in one of his major musicals AND already released as a single ('Our Kind of Love' was released in the UK, sung by Hannah Waddingham) into what is supposed to be a brand new musical. 'Married Man' etc were forgivable because they were merely part of his trunk.
Also the argument that "oh, but it's acceptable because he originally wrote it for the sequel" doesn't wash. By that line of thinking, it would therefore be acceptable for ALW to take 'Memory' out of Cats and stick it in a new musical about Leoncavallo and Puccini, since that's what the tune was originally written for.
The lyrics are horrendous as ever. Actually they're a bit better than the ones for 'Till I Hear You Sing', but they're even more forgettable.
Did anyone else hear of what happened last week over Twitter? I've only recently found out and am not up to scratch with the details, but it seems that the theatre merchandiser for Love Never Dies and one of the SMs posted that Phantom fans against the sequel were losers and that they would end up paying to see the show anyway and would queue outside the stage door for autographs...multiple times! Now I'm seeing the first preview (with a heavy heart), but that's the limit of what I'm spending on LND...no intention to see it multiple times and I certainly won't be stage-dooring with the gushing tween fans. What arrogance.

I hope no one finds my description offensive remember that these were the person in questions words not mine. The twitter situation was as follows, basically:
Phantom fans who are against the sequel are "pathetic t***s" who should "f*** off"
The bit in " " are his exact words. Lovely. Of course the offending comments have been removed. I would rather they were removed and he apologised but I think he is thinking he can just brush it under the carpet.

Sorry for not replying to your post about in Facebook, BTW, but I thought I'd remove it for fear of controversy. Now that I know more about the situation I'm not sure if I really care if I speak my mind now.
OK so yes, it seems that he may have been very slightly provoked by anti-sequel fans and LSD, but in LSD's case that was humorous and nothing malicious and no fan that I can see ever tweeted to him using offensive language. He seems like a nice guy and I feel a bit sorry for him, but then if I were in his position, the most I would do would be to keep silent on whole thing and IGNORE IT. I don't know if I'm more offended by that comment or the theatre merchandiser girl's comment that we'd all be going to see LND multiple times and queuing up for autographs. She's got another thing coming if that's what she really thinks. And that's the most I'm going to say on this, at least in public.
Frankly I think a lot of the hardcore LND people are being childish. I'm not referring to any specific individuals, but I noticed a splinter fan group has recently been set up where those against LND are labelled as "stupid", "losers", "idiots" and "pathetic". This plus the whole "not true phans" crap. If you're one of those people and you are lurking on this board and reading this post, you should be thoroughly ashamed of yourself and you do your case no favours whatsoever.
On a lighter note, someone posted this (and others) on LSD on Facebook...it cracks me up:

Re: Love Never Dies - all views allowed
I admit I did/do feel sorry for him. He is getting a lot of flack for something which if you think about it, he is just working on, he didn't personally have any involvement in the actual writing of the sequel etc. He didn't greenlight the sequel and he is getting a lot of the flack because he is probably the easiest person to target with his twitter being public and all. I think he did get to breaking point but at no point has anyone ever personally attacked him, or used offensive language. He really should apologise but I doubt he will.
Another thing, your point about the splinter group on Facebook, anti-sequel fans will make their views known about the sequel. They do not attack fans of the sequel. There is quite a high proportion of sequel fans who as you say call anti-sequel fans "stupid" and "losers" that is a personal attack on real people.
I had heard about the "queuing for autographs" comment but hadn't known who had made it, but that is extremely far from the truth. Out of principal I will not attend the sequel at all, but I know those who are going out of morbid curiousity certainly aren't going to be going to the stage door. To be honest, I don't often stage door ANY show, unless I am perhaps meeting someone/ have already arranged to go round to see someone. But I am not attacking people who stage door there in case I get picked up on for that.
I often think, what happens if some of these die hards go and don't enjoy it? Will they admit it? Or will they already be going into the show with the mindset of "this is amazing" that they can't possibly not like it.

Exactly. If the best he can do is pull a song he wrote for a show that was staged ten years ago, then he's either not really trying anymore or doesn't care, or both.
Also the argument that "oh, but it's acceptable because he originally wrote it for the sequel" doesn't wash. Or to be even more relevant, taking the "Angel of Music" melody and putting it in Aspects of Love, since that was its original destination. If he'd tried that in '89, you can bet a lot of people would have been crying foul.
Did anyone else hear of what happened last week over Twitter? I highly doubt this will ever come closer to me than New York (if that)--but even if it does I wouldn't pay to see it. I've never been the sort of person to pay money for any old thing just because it's attached to PotO, and I find the assumption that I would rather insulting, in fact.

Part of the framework for an unfinished Christine Lovebot? Maybe the Phantom had trouble getting "her" just right and has a bunch of incomplete previous attempts in his workshop?
