operafantomet wrote:I think what people react to is how he, Sierra Boggess and others in the production dismiss the characters from the original. Especially since he, as you say, seems to have been passionate about the Phantom role in the past, and is also basing a new character on the original. Whereas I would be surprised if he DIDN'T defend the role he's created, I think it's low to talk down the original to promote the new musical. That goes for everyone in the production, and is not specific for Ramin Karimloo.davd09 wrote:Well I read that article and found nothing offensive from what Ramin had said. I didn't feel he was responding to people not liking the show just the whole hype around it before they set foot on stage. He's been asked that many times and I never found him to insult any of the Phans and even said, well if they like it they like it. We just have to portray our characters as best we can to serve the piece. I've found Ramin to be a very laid back guy but he is passionate about the shows he does, and I'm glad he is. It comes across when he's on stage. He has always supported the Original and now supports the Love Never Dies which is not surprising. Also, I've never heard him say that the characters in the original were two dimensional or not good enough as it has been said on some sites which are opposed to LND. I also feel everyone is entitled to their opinion but some of the comments I've read based on this specific interview has left me confused. I have watched some earlier interviews when he was the Phantom at Her Majesty's and I see an actor who is passionate about the role and the show. He has always been friendly at stage door as well and I know that he does get shy with things like that because of some people do tend to over step the mark.
I just wanted to add my two cents into it as I really don't understand where he was offensive.
Yes, that bugs me too. It seems the LND people want to have it both ways; half the time it's called 'Phantom 2' and is a sequel, the other half (when it suits them), it's a standalone show. And again here: they complain that they don't want to be compared with the original (understandably since that show cannot be topped), yet they're doing just that, and worse, talking down the original just to make LND look better. Not on.
Davd09, when you say "We just have to portray our characters as best we can to serve the piece", does that mean you're in the cast?
Personally if it were up to me, I'd move this entire thread over to the 'Other Musicals' board. If it wants to be a standalone show, then it can be just that. I can't be the only one who hates seeing this thread at the top of the ALW Phantom board, if only because I know I'm going to dislike whatever's been written in it and am equally tired of the controversy (although on this occasion I have to say I agree with LSD's rebuttal).
Re: Love Never Dies - all views allowed
I think moving this thread to Other Musicals wouldn't be a bad idea.

REALLY late to the party here, but I finally got around to watching these vids. HILARIOUS! I particularly love 'The Beauty Underneath' parody. Dancing Phantom cutouts for the win!

Re: Love Never Dies - all views allowed
So I am going to be in London for one night in early July, if I decide I want to check out the show for myself, what is the cheapest way to buy tickets? In New York we have the TKTS booth or rush tickets for most shows, do they do that in London? I'm not sure if I'd be able to make it. I will be returning from a tour around 6:30pm and the show begins at 7:30pm, so I probably should not buy in advance.

Re: Love Never Dies - all views allowed
There's also a TKTS booth in London's Leicester Square, but I don't think LND is being sold there yet. Anyone know? Anyway, I'd say just turn up at the theatre before the show and I'm pretty sure there will always be at least one ticket available.
Re: Love Never Dies - all views allowed
I don't think any shows but the Saturday ones have been sold out so far. There also was some discount tickets at TheatreMonkey - that was in early April, but give it a try:Cape Twirl of Doom wrote:So I am going to be in London for one night in early July, if I decide I want to check out the show for myself, what is the cheapest way to buy tickets? He probably thought that in the first act; by the second he'd probably started thinking about what he was going to have for dinner...
Love Should Die Merchandise - Discount coupon
Hey everyone - As Rebecca has mentioned in previous posts we're heading to Michigan next weekend to see our last performance with the US Touring company...
We've decided to purchase 2 shirts from the LSD store and wear them to the theatre that day in protest of the US Tour closing... (as most rumours state the US Tour is closing to make way for LND).
If any Love Should Die supporters are out there, and you've been thinking of making a purchase at the LSD store, we received 2 discount codes for future purchases. We'd love to share them with you. Just note, the codes expire June 1st. $5 off any order $20 or more.
Send either myself or Rebecca a message if you want the code. To check out what merchandise is available at the store, check out the site: http://www.loveshoulddie.com/LSD/Shop.html

Re: Love Never Dies - all views allowed
This has no relevance to anything really, it doesn't really fit in with what we have been discussing in this thread but Summer Strallen has stated she was told Meg was 15 in the original Phantom.
I know we have went through the age thing before but I'm sorry I just don't see Meg as being a 15 year old girl in the original. If anyone however can come up with an argument for her being that age then I wouldn't mind hearing it.

Re: Love Never Dies - all views allowed
I've never seen anything to indicate age, but 15 sounds a little too young for Original Meg. I mean, she's young, but not so young that she doesn't have the training to be an active professional member of the opera company's productions...a Slave Girl Dancer in Hannibal, the Jeweler's Maid in Il Muto, the Gypsy in Don Juan...and that's just what we see within the time covered on stage.
I've always gotten the impression that's she a little younger than Christine, but NOT significantly so.

Re: Love Never Dies - all views allowed
I agree, I envision her as 17-18 somewhere. Although her mother is the ballet mistress, I can't imagine a 15 year old newbie would play such a prominent part, she wouldn't even been fully trained. Ditto for Christine - in the Leroux book she has completed her singing education and is now a member of the opera chorus, which indicate she is somewhere between 19 and 21. Although the stage show takes liberties re: Leroux, it actually seldom contradicts the book.Paula74 wrote:I've never seen anything to indicate age, but 15 sounds a little too young for Original Meg. For the movie, however, both Christine and Meg appears to be younger, if only slightly so. It seems a lot of the background for the LND characters are lifted from the movie rather the original. And I guess Summer Strallen prefers to play a 25 year old rather than a 30+ dancer...
Re: Love Never Dies - all views allowed
But...didn't Andy say that LND is a sequel/non-sequel to the stage production, and NOT the movie? I'm sure I read that somewhere, when somebody questioned him about the dates at the end of the movie not jiving with the dates in LND. I am soooo confused!!!

He also said LND is not a sequel, and that it contains four of the original characters, so...HDKingsbury wrote:But...didn't Andy say that LND is a sequel/non-sequel to the stage production, and NOT the movie? Apparently Meg's age in LND is 26. Which is funny, because if we go by the whole dates thing, that makes her exactly 0 in the original. OMG, is she the Phantom's daughter? Did she shoot her mummy?
Re: Love Never Dies - all views allowed
Are some of you old enough to remember "new math"? Well, I think that is what Andy is using for LND. 10 years later is really 26...a kid who should only be 9 years old is really 10, etc...

Re: Love Never Dies - all views allowed
Not even "New Math" can explain the dates and ages used by ALW and his co-conspirators. They simply used whatever numbers suited them and the devil take the hindmost, the hindmost being anybody who gives a hoot about consistency. There's no profit in trying to make sense out of a lot of things about this show. The attempt just leads to headache.

Details about some of the "changes" being worked into the show. Pretty odd making such changes AFTER previews and opening.

One of the many things that pisses me off about this musical is how obviously almost everything is ripped off from something else. for instance, did anyone notice that Madame Giry looks exactly like Mrs Danvers from Rebecca?
She is wearing the SAME DAMN THING, and the entire park burning down in the end? COME ON!

I knew she acted (and sounded) very identical to Mrs Danvers, but that... Though I do like Giry's outfit with the white blouse best.
So I guess the question then is; Is Christine Rebecca or I?

Re: Love Never Dies - all views allowed
In the last couple of days I've fallen in love with Ramin singing "Till I Hear You Sing". I found myself listening to the LND cast recording and tried listening to "Beneath A Moonless Sky", but I was just so irritated with it. The lyrics are SO BAD. It's entirely laughable. And yet once in a while it'll start playing in my head, "And I touched you..." *shudder*. Irritating song, but it's catchy.
Hearing about how much sizzle and chemistry there is between Sierra and Ramin makes me so curious as to how their scenes go. A teensy, tiny part of me is tempted to see it if it comes to LA, but then I remind myself that in-between I have to put up with all the other songs I really don't like.
I hope some Phan gets in there with a good HD camera and gets all the Erik/Christine scenes so I can just see them at home. At least to quell the curiosity.
I also happened upon the video of Katherine Jenkins singing "Love Never Dies". She has a beautiful voice, but after watching a couple other live videos of her I noticed as another Phan said, that she exhibits no emotion when she sings. She's like a beautiful, empty doll with a gorgeous voice. I wish she'd inflect some emotion into her singing. Ramin does it well. Nevertheless, I am going crazy waiting for her version of LND to become available in the States (Tuesday... grr, I hate waiting! lol). And I do kind of like Sierra's version, but near the end of the song her voice is so high and her words run together and you can't really tell what she's saying.
