Finally set a date for revisiting the Broadway production: 2 May, matinée performance. If anyone fancies joining or meeting up pre-/post-show, let me know.

Incidentally, anyone know how to wangle a backstage tour on Broadway? I've managed to get one in London and Las Vegas (and operafantomet just decided to break in backstage in Copenhagen...), but never Broadway.

....I didn't break it, the door just happened to be open. And anyway, I know the security code. Smile

Awesome you get to see both Phantom and Evita on Broadway. Totally looking forward to hear your thoughts on them. Wish I could help with a backstage tour at Phantom, but I don't really know anyone at the theatre. I really hope someone come to your aid, though. The Majestic is one of the iconic POTO sites in this world.

I plan on seeing Evita and Phantom in July, it will be my first time for Phantom in NY (only saw the national tour a few times believe it or not!) A backstage tour would be insane, in the best possible notion of the word lol

I wish I had waited til this summer to visit NY again so I could see Evita and JCS as well as Phantom and the Yanks. But if I can afford to take a vacation this summer and take the time off, I'll probably go to Chicago or Tampa, since I've been to NY a number of times but never either of those places.

I'm sure you get this type of post all the time, such as two above this...

Ahem...

I will be visiting NYC in October and plan to see Phantom of course. How do I go about expressing my appreciation to the cast and perhaps seeing the innards of the show?

SO I hear Hugh is leaving in June? If that is so, any word on who is replacing him as the Phantom? Im very curious as I will be there early July, I was looking forward to Hugh, but looks like I will be seeing someone else...unless he extends.

Hmm, that'll be interesting to see who they bring in if he leaves. I love love love love Hugh, but I have to admit that when I saw him in February, his performance was lackluster. It was the last show of the week, and it looked like it.

On his official facebook page it states his contract is up in early June (this info was posted in late March) so unless he extends I take it we will have a new Phantom on Broadway this summer

Question is: will we get a "new" or new Phantom? Wink

Aaaw, that's a pity. He was fantastic when I saw him in August. But I think it can be refreshing for the production to get brand new faces. I still remember the excitement when Jennifer Hope Wills was cast as Christine. There's also been a decent buzz around Peter Jöback in London... But a lackluster new lead is not preferable to a seasoned veteran (especially for a producer), so I see why they play safe.

I posted that.

At this point, his current contract ends in early June, but the last time I heard from him...which was within the past three or four weeks...he said there was absolutely no news, official or unofficial, about renewing or extending, etc.

I haven't checked back with him because I've had complications with a dislocated knee and that's been my priority lately...but when I have a chance, I'll check with him or his manager and see if there's any news. But I honestly don't expect any updates this early...in the past, sometimes things aren't settled and official until just weeks before the contract expires.

Also, he'll definitely be out on May 10 & 11...and possibly the 12th.

Good to know! There was also some rumblings on BWW forums as well about him leaving in June and as to who would replace him, but specific dates werent given, I know with Phantom alot of things are last minute, so I wouldnt be surprised it isnt announced for a while as to who will be playing the role next if Hugh does leave in June

Well nuts. I absolutely do not have time to get to NYC between now and June. I loved Hugh when saw him a few years ago on Broadway and I'd be interested to see how he's grown in the role since. Ah, well. Hopefully someone can, ah, *document* his performance. Smile

Probably old news by now, but I see that George Lee Andrews is in the ensemble of Evita. I had wondered where he would end up.

Yep! Brad Little's there too. I'm glad GLA has gone on very quickly to another show.

I'm sad to say my most recent visit to the Broadway production was a disappointment, only compensated for by a backstage tour. But the show itself? Frankly, if I weren't a fan of the show, I too would be joining the chorus of detractors who call the production dated and tired. It seems like Phantom is a hit-and-miss show these days, because I know London definitely has off-nights too where I get bored, but this was really quite bad. My only consolation is that I *know* it can be so much better, including with *some* of the same cast members, because my previous visit to the Majestic was, overall, a much better experience. On that occasion, I found the show dazzling and spectacular and full of energy, even though the Christine and Raoul weren't my cup of tea. Hugh was the Phantom, and while I wasn't a fan of his voice, he delivered a thrilling performance in the Final Lair.

On this occasion? I was so bored. So bored that I actually dozed off at one point... The only other time I've ever done that in Phantom was seeing the filmthatshallnotbenamed in the cinema back in 2004. I won't go into detail as I don't want to risk offending people, but the jist is that I think Cameron Mackintosh should do a major cast purge like he did with Les Misérables on Broadway in 1996. I feel certain that if he cared as much about Phantom as he does with Les Mis (but we all know what his favourite of the two is), he would do this if he saw the performance I saw. Marni Raab looked, acted and sounded extremely bored. The boredom was infectious. Half the time I didn't even feel she was attempting to act; she didn't even bother with some of the usual blocking. I personally feel she's too old for the role now and has been doing it for far too long. There must be hundreds of performers out there who would kill to play Christine and could do a better job. I don't understand why the casting on Broadway has to be so stale. I found Kyle as Raoul forgettable and felt his voice, which was very stereotypically 'Broadway' (overuse of vibrato, over-American accent for a period piece, not particularly soulful), was wrong for the part. Hugh didn't really satisfy me either, given that I knew what he was capable of. He did get better towards the end, but I thought the performance was rather campy, like a parody of the Phantom, and I just wasn't a fan of the voice. Sorry. I much preferred GLA to his son-in-law, whose voice was unexpectedly high-pitched. I did like Marilyn Caskey as Giry very much, however. But overall, the entire thing felt like a theme park ride with the majority of the cast going through the motions. It didn't help the audience were dreadful. Either tourists with no knowledge of theatre etiquette or huge groups of schoolkids who treated the thing like a rock concert, and not in a good way.

Considering how frequently Hal Prince visits the production from what I was told, I'm rather surprised the show felt that way. Oh well. I was intrigued to learn the monkey box is the original (as, apparently, is the chandelier). I'm pretty sure the chandelier in London is at least the second model...and I assumed the monkey in London is not original, having seen it break before on stage...does anyone know whether the London monkey is as old as Broadway's?

I saw the show in December with Hugh and Marni and had very similar thoughts. I noted it as my least favorite performance thus far out of almost 30 performances. I was hoping that I just caught an off-night. Your sentiments about Hugh's Phantom being similar to a parody is what I thought as well. I felt like I was watching the Scarlet Pimpernel pretending to be a caricature of the Phantom. It was obnoxious and annoying - and not the least bit threatening, intense or thriling. Here is what I said in December about the overall performance: "It felt very uninspired. It was as if I were watching a dress rehearsal where the director said "please only give this show 20% of your best effort." Hopefully things get better soon and that the performances we saw are the exception and not the rule. Because I agree - we know it can be better! Smile

Let's start the speculation....... Very Happy

we know he wont be replaced by Howard as he is cast in Rebecca. Maybe Hugh will snag the role of Mr. Dewynter?

There is also no US tour anymore to import cast members from, Maybe a Vegas import? That would be a nice change, but I doubt Anthony would want to leave before it closes.

So all things are pointing to a new Phantom, unless they bring back TMG (shudder)

In the past they had a good track record of promoting Raouls, but lately I dont see any recent Raouls being able to fit the role vocally.

Lets just hope if they cast new they dont try the whole "terribly mis-cast young hot guy who cant really sing phantom"

As for Hugh, It was over a year since I saw him and I still like him, vocally atleast, yes there were some odd acting choices but for me he made up for it vocally. I guess I will always be someone who looks more at the vocals than the acting choice since it is much easier for me to "hear" the show (coughbootleg) that to see it live.

about the backstage tours............I too wish I knew someone that knew someone who had a cousin that once dated the SM over at the Shubert who knows the SM at Phantom, lol Very Happy

I'm so gutted I didn't get to see Sean, or Ryan Silverman for that matter. I heard great things about them, and didn't think much of Kyle's Raoul.

Something I just thought of: I don't remember seeing the dates on Daaé's grave any more in the graveyard scene. Have they been removed? Or were they never there in the Broadway set? I can't remember from the last time I went to the Majestic whether they were there before. All I saw last week was a big 'DAAÉ' and nothing else.

Sorry to hear that, I think he would be very interesting in the role. But I guess we'll first have to see if and when a Broadway production of "Rebecca" happens... Have they gotten the financial in place by now? And will Sierra Boggess still star in it?

"Rebecca" got the finances in place and is scheduled to open this Fall. Boggess, however, has already moved on to "Prince of Broadway," so she won't be in it.

I recently bought these US tour brochures off eBay:

1992 - Rick Hilsabeck - Teri Bibb (Sarah Pfisterer) - Nat Chandler (?)
1994 - Rick Hilsabeck - Sarah Pfisterer (Rita Harvey) - Nat Chandler (Atlanta)

Does anyone know where that cast performed in 1992, and which theatre the other visited in Atlanta in 1994? I did a quick search without success, and before I plunge into a more thorough search I wanted to ask the almighty DP brain.
