Hi! Has anyone seen Hungarian version of POTO? I am seeing it on Thursday in Budapest and was wondering if it is too much different from original musical since this is "non-replica" version...

As far as I've understood, the score is identical to the English version. The design is totally different, albeit the colour schemes from the original for the most is kept - red and green/blue for Hannibal, white and black for the lair, pink for Il Muto etc. The costume sketches reminds a lot of Maria Bjørnson's, but the actual costumes on stage looks very different (in my personal opinion, they've used very odd materials, too shiny and modern looking).

Some of the biggest changes are that
Spoiler:

There are lots of other changes too, these were the ones that first came to mind. Have lots of fun, and please give us your thoughts on the production. Of the non-replica productions (Hungary and Poland), Hungary wins by far!!

PS - welcome to the board. Very Happy

Several never-before-seen photos from Hungary, including Raoul trapped in the magical lasso in "Final Lair", and several from the Phantom's lair in general. I love the graveyard one!

OK, this is highly disturbing. Two weeks ago I browsed through the Madach theatre's web site, to find info on their Phantom production - if it was still running, for pictures etc. I spent around 15 minutes on the site, but without logging in or signing guestbook or anything. Well, these last two weeks I've gotten lots of spam mail with Hungarian content to my private email. WTF?! How is this possible? It it just a weird coincidence, or should I be worried?

Anyway, I found out they're playing April 30. to May 11. this spring. Visit the links at your own risk...
http://www.azoperahazfantomja.hu/szereposztas.html
http://www.madachszinhaz.hu/Actual/Actual_h.php

(the first link tells who is performing when, from the Phantom and Christine to Lefèvre and Reyer - pretty cool)

Hi! I am planning another visit of hungarian production in two weeks:) if there´s anything particular that i should keep my eye on (e.g. costumes, choreography or whatever), just let me know. I´ll try my best to write a review of the show afterwards.

When will you see it again?
I wish you the best, I love the production really!
I love the new ideas and the set is wonderful and the actors are strong and powerful.

My only request would be that I've tried to get a hold on the Hungarian souvenir brochure for ages, without success... Would it be possible to pick up one for me, if I paid you for the brochure + shipping? If not, I totally understand, just wanted to check.

Also, do you know if there's any planned performing dates except May?

Have lots of fun, and give us some notes of what you thought of it this time around!

It´s only my guess that they put the Phantom on every couple of months and sort of rotate it with other licenced titles? there had been some performances in January and now it´s on again... Just keep checking their site for further information. Madach Szinhaz is quite lacking in proper marketing for this show IMHO:(

Hi! I am planning to go to see the show on saturday matinee:) managed to book good seats in the middle of the front row so I am really exciting about it:)

I agree with you it is quite refreshing to see all the new ideas put into place in such a creative manner but for me, personally, the original is and always will be THE original - the London one I mean:) I think I would love Hungarian production much much more if they had invested more money in the stage effects. The ouverture without the chandellier rising above the audiences heads just doesn´t work for me:( and yeah, the costumes... well, that is another story.

Looks like I'll be seeing this production in October. Still have to get a ticket, but many seats were available, so I'm not in an extraordinary rush (although I am sure it'll fill up). I am very excited to see this non-replica (although, so far, it's the only non-replica I've ever been interested in attending).

Are there any other ways to purchase tickets from outside of Hungary besides the Madach website?

hey there. I just made my purchase for oct. performance in Madach Theatre (for every case). their prices and also variety of available seats are best (IMHO) but of course there´s plenty other places where you can get a ticket for Phantom, e.g.
http://www.eventim.hu/en/tickets/madach-szinhaz-az-operahaz-fantomja-budapest-44209/event.html

You´ll love it if you are open minded:-))) they have pretty amazing cast (I saw it twice with two completely different cast and with no exception i was blown away). Doesn´t look that glamourous as in London, but still it´s incredible experience!

p.s. if you are smaller though, go for front row seats as the rake of the seats in this theatre is bad

Hey there MajesticPhantom-I see you are going to see Phantom in Budapest this coming Oct.?? I just posted this in another place but thought I would ask you if you are still going and if so, could you please pick me up a souvenir program while you are there? I would pay ahead of time for the cost of the program and shipping via PayPal? PM me when you get a chance...thanks!

I just ordered my ticket to see the Hungarian production! I'll be going October 22, and I cannot wait!

Devon- I'll message you about getting you that brochure!

Besides, when the exchange rate between USD and FT is as amazing as it is right now, how could I NOT buy an 8th row seat at that bargain price?!

The matinee! I'd rather have gone to an evening show (my general preference), but I'm not sure of how long I'll be staying in Budapest, so I felt that leaving my evening open would be a better option for travel or evening activities. Smile

hey, me too!! Very Happy I´ve seen both matinee and evening shows before and don´t worry, the cast in Madach always gives it their very best no matter of the time of a day. hope you´ll enjoy it despite the language barrier. I myself didn´t understand a single word of hungarian, but found that I didn´t mind it at all.

Hungarian Phantom Empty costumes

Post  mona lisa Sun May 20, 2012 4:52 pm

Thought I could share a link with photos that I recently found. small size but decent quality

http://www.terasz.hu/main.php?id=eloadomuveszet&page=cikk&cikk_id=3943&rovat_id=73

mind that all the costumes look much better in pictures than on stage. I usually sit in front row and from the close proximity they all look very cheap and worn. I've seen the show two weeks ago in Budapest again and yet again had slightly mixed impressions of it. some really great performances, some interesting choices in blocking and choreography, some less interesting choices in costumes...

Good for you! Must be great to be there for such a special performance Smile How was it??? They should give themselves an aniversary gift in a form of new, proper chandelier, no? Wink I´ll be seeing the show this Sunday again and I am wondering if they "brushed" the things a little after all this recent media attention coming with the celebrations. Like some of their costumes could use an update really...

The first act begun with Victor Posta as Phantom, Barbara Fonyo as Christine and Balint Magyar as Raoul. In Music of the Night all 3 Phantoms (Sandor Sasvari, Attila Csengeri, Victor Posta) were together. At the end of the scene Attila Csengeri took over until the Wandering Child Scene. At the end of the first act all Phantoms let the chandelier fall Smile. At the beginning of the 2nd act they showed a short video about 10 years, the premiere, the rehearsals....The the intermission music begun and Andrea Maho and Zsolt Hommonay took over. At the beginning of Wandering Child Attila and Sandor came, as well Barbara and Balint again, so we had 2 Phantoms, 2 Christines and 2 Raouls in the scene. Sandor played the Phantom till the Final Lair. It was amazing to see so many in a short time. To step in during the show is very interesting. The curtain call was normal and then more followed. Tamas Szirtes talked, we saw a written message from Andrew Lloyd Webber and best wishes from the Japanese Cast. After that a woman and a man played on a flute and on an accordian the title song and then again the title song with Linda Kiraly (Christine in 2003) and Zoltan Miller (Phantom, Raoul 2003). All the Phantoms and Christine joined in the song at the end.On the stage were all the cast members from now and the past. I think it was an amazing eve.

Very nice, it really sounds like amazing evening. I must say that the show from 2nd June (matinee) was by far the best I´ve ever seen here in Madach. None technical errors, beautiful chemistry between the cast. Sandor Sasvari and Andrea Maho were on, and they also had very strong Raoul. It was supposed to be Zsolt Hommonay (according to cast board) but I´m pretty sure it wasn´t him. My fiancee says that they switched the actors after the opening scene, which is strange, but maybe something happened at short notice? Well, never mind, whoever it was, he was gooood!
