(Yes, I know there are supposed to be accent-marks in that title. But I can't figure out how to make my keyboard do them! I know there's supposed to be some kind of special characters panel, but my screen-reader doesn't like it! So I haven't figured that one out yet.)

Anyway, you guys may know about this already, but I thought I'd share in case not. :-) So I thought I'd check on the iTunes store to see if, by any chance, I could get the original Leroux in French in audiobook. And damned if the iTunes store doesn't have two French audiobooks of the Leroux novel, both of them, apparently, unabridged no less! So I bought one of them, and have just gotten to the end of the Rooftop chapters. And, so far, I'm liking it very much! The readers are good (it's a dramatic reading, so there are several readers voicing the different characters). At least, I like the ones reading Erik, Christine and Mme. Giry (the main narrator reads Raoul I think). Not sure I'm so nuts about the voicing of the managers. And, for some reason, the character-voices are noticeably quieter than the main narrator. But whatever! And, in spite of its description as unabridged, I think there are some minor alterations, like taking out some of the "he/she said" around the dialogue and just switching voices. But, on the whole, really good! I can't wait to get the other one to compare!

And, I must say, I see what you guys mean about passages missing from the Damatos translations! (Which, sadly, I think most of the English "unabridged" audiobooks are.) Wow! :-( Unfortunately, I understand the parts I'm already well familiar with from the English a lot better than the parts Damatos leaves out. :-( My French isn't what it once was! Still, even from the little that I get of them, Wow! They really does give the book a richer character!

Oooh, awesome that iTunes has audiobooks of "Fantôme" in the original French! I didn't think to check there.

And yeah, I think all the English audiobooks are based on the de Mattos translation, which is a shame since it leaves out so much. But that's the one in the public domain, so anyone can adapt it without needing to pay royalties. I wish Oxford or Penguin had an audiobook division or could make deals with other companies to adapt their far better translations.

EDIT: Huh, not sure why it posted twice. Mods, feel free to remove this one... Sorry about that.

IamErik771. Yeah, It'd rock to have audiobooks of some of the more modern translations! Bummer!
