Phantom mockumentary Empty Phantom mockumentary

Post  operafantomet Fri Dec 04, 2009 11:17 am

As some of you may or may not know, Josefine and myself did have a lot of fun when going to see "Phantom of the Opera" in Copenhagen this spring. At the end of the season we started filming stuff* - interviewing eachother, me tasting the Phantom drink, in the theatre's grand staircase, at the souvenir stand etc.

It escalated, cause we started including other theatre guests, the staff and such. In the end we also did interviews with the conductor, Christine and Carlotta, and the Phantom, and we got to follow Raoul on a backstage tour. Very Happy

We got to film quite amazing stuff, and it has now been edited into a mockumentary (documentary with a silly undertone). Some stuff remains in the final editing, and we also need to get it approved by those participating. But it should be online by at least March, if not earlier.

In the mean time, here's a trailer.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCUiEr3P3Mg

*which was Josefine's idea, and an awesome one. The result is really beyond my wildest dreams!

Yay, hurray. It's so much fun to finally show some of the stuff we worked so hard with in spring. And you have edited that trailer beautifully Operafantomet.

I loved the trailer - very dramatic music! I'll look forward to watching this! Very Happy This may be a silly question, but what language are the interviews in?

PS - so far it looks a lot nicer than the one my phan friends and I put together, which now seems more like an uber long inside joke... LOL! I love fan documentaries. They're so entertaining and really show the love and madness in a way 'professional' documentaries never quite capture...

The people who are in the documentary are all Swedish, Danish and Norwegians, but all the interviews are done in English since we thought that would be a lot more practical so more people can understand.

But me (Norwegian) and Josefine (Swedish) DO talk Danish at one point. We sound terrible, ha-ha-ha!

I'm quite amazed that all agreed to talk English. Not just that, many speak English so well too. Very Happy

PS, Rebecca - there were some parts of your documentary that wouldn't load more than maybe 30 seconds on YouTube. I dunno if it was a hangup in my internet connection (wasn't the browser, tried two different ones), but I only got to see the beginning (overture part) and the end (train to New York, at the Majestic, not being allowed inside the Pantages etc).

But what I did see of it was very entertaining! It's made with love, and it shows the phan atmosphere of productions long passed and rarely seen online. I guess that's partly our approach too - few actually got to go to Copenhagen and see Phantom there, but lots of fun stuff happened, and it was a grand production. We wanted to share that with others! I'm always happy when you share stuff from Toronto - it's a world I know so well (Phantom) and yet so exotic. So keep it coming! Very Happy

Well, it's just a little teaser that doesn't give anything much away really, but the clip with Flemming is quite cool, albeit short Basketball .

Spring 2010? Oh dear. How am I going to wait that long? Hmmm. I wonder if I might actually have my costume done by then. lol

Loved the teaser videos. Looks like the finished product will be great to watch.

Hopefully it'll be out sooner. There are several we'd like to get an approval of (people starring in the mockumentary), and that might take some time. But we're not talking May here! (famous last words... bom )

And I think you'll all love the video. Many interesting clips there, and some funny moments... Although ALL people contributing did an amazing job, I have to say the Phantom (Preben Kristensen) did a heck of an interview. He was SOOO in character!

Hmmm... sorry to hear some of the clips weren't loading properly... They took forever to upload, so I'm not sure if that may have been a factor. When I sent it to my phan friends who were also in the video they didn't mention they'd experienced a problem, but I think perhaps I ought to double check with them. I'd hate to have to reload it again - it took FOREVER!!!

ANd I am very much looking forward to getting a peek at the Copenhagen production! Likely it isn't one I'd have the opportunity to visit anytime soon, but having heard so many lovely things about it I'm eager to get a closer look!

Post  operafantomet Tue Apr 20, 2010 5:46 am

Finally!

*digs out red carpet, champagne and gala clothes*

The Phantom mockumentary Josefine and me has been working on is now online. The finishing editing and approvals took forever, so I'm so glad it's at last done and public! Very Happy

The mockumentary started as a small, private project. Josefine suggested we should film some of our experiences in Copenhagen, as we went there basically once a month in the spring of 2009. So we started interviewing eachother, I tasted the Phantom drink, and we filmed a bit inside. But people found us so quirky/strange/cute that they tagged along, and in the end we had interviews with key cast members, the conductor and whatnot. Everything is filmed without script, so the result is... spontaneous... Laughing

Thanks to everyone participating. It was great, great fun, and I think you all will like the result.

Josefine will probably say some words later on too. Until then:

PART ONE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hga8b5w5eJY
In this clip: before the show, stalking the conductor, hunting for the cast

PART TWO: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EnHM-8I-gUE
In this clip: cast interviews, below the stage

PART THREE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QIcRKrVbbJg
In this clip: on stage, costume talk

PART FOUR: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73rMnBchmtQ
In this clip: phan talk, it's over now, credits

ETA: there are contributions from people you might know from the online community:

Josefine and myself, but you probably guessed that... Josefine was a fantastic interviewer!
Raphael has a cool art work in part 3
Jennie J. from POTO.com is interviewed in part 4

Thank's for creating this, guys!

That comment just made my day! Very Happy

And ML6, Tomas Kofod really is awesome. One thing is that he was a kick-ass Raoul, but he also appears to be so genuinely kind - not just to us, but to everybody. The backstage tour he gave us was done close to midnight on a Saturday, after he had done two shows a row. He was exhausted, but did it anyway. In English. Kudos!

Well done, Anea and Josephine! The mockumentary was well worth the wait – loved watching all the backstage stuff!

Favourite bits:
- “MOTN in a drink”
- Front of house girl: “Funny people in the audience? Ermm... You??!!!” Laughing
- Josephine cracking up after the dresser goes on about the short and the long string on her shirt – hilarious!
- Tomas! Now I can see why you rave about him. He really seems like a nice guy. And that trap door looks tiny Shocked

Oh and what’s that piece of music in part one (between minutes 3 and 4, I think ), while you are showing the chandeliers? It sounds great.

The music we've used for the teasers and the second chandelier bit is called "Dogma". I think it's one of those especially made for the editing program I've used. I like it a lot!

What I find amazing is that you two were able to actually film any of this. I find it so amazing how certain regions/countries etc have a different tolerance for things like that. Also.. do you anticipate any problems with RUG forcing you to take these down?

I hope not.. just mildly curious.

Yes. sunny

But hopefully they'll see the mockumentary is to their benefit as such, and neither approve nor remove it.

When it comes to much of what we've filmed, we've tried to focus it on persons rather than production stuff. Of course there is a bit of both, but a lot of what we did is interviews with people whom we asked in advance if they wanted and could participate. The exception is in large the opening and some of the stuff with Tomas Kofod. And just to clarify: the theatre had nothing to do with the filming. We thank them in the end merely because of the location and the effort of bringing Phantom on a Scandinavian stage, but they are in no way involved.
