Calling all phans for a video sing-along

To celebrate 25 years of Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Phantom of the Opera" stage musical, I want to put together a sing-along video, and I want all of you to participate. All I can say is that the video will hopefully contain some surprises, and the more people participating, the better. Ideally there'll be one entry for each line of the song of choice - Masquerade.

Be creative! Gather a group of friends and be a "flash mob" in the nearest grand staircase. Or on the subway. Dress up in Phantom costume replicas, or in a funky general Masquerade costume. Two Christines fighting over one Raoul? Drunk Madame Giry? Maybe it's time for a new Barbie and Ken version. Or maybe a nod to Leroux by adding the black and white dominos. Maybe you're heading for Palais Garnier this summer? Or a theatre where Phantom is playing/has played? What about "Masquerading" in front of your Phantom collection? Or have your grandfather dance! Or maybe a full scale replica of Bjørnson's costumes and Lynne's choreography?

So what's in it for you? Apart from participating in a fun video celebrating a beloved musical? Apart from glory and honour? Aaah, here comes the fun part. After the video is put together and has been online for some time, people will be able to vote on the top 3 entries. Two winners will receive replicas of the Hannibal slavegirl wristbands used in Hamburg, while the main winner will receive a bigger (surprise!) costume item, based on whether the winner is a male or female.

I really, really, really want you guys to participate. I know there's so many creative talents here. And I think it would be cool to have a phan greeting including entries from all over the world (knowing the main entries will be from Europe and America, but still). Spread the word, and dig out your camera. The finished result will be cool.

Sounds like a great idea. Now if only I had a suitable video camera.

Much of the Phantom Mockumentary Josefine and me made two years ago was filmed with my Canon Ixus 870IS. The video quality is surprisingly good for such a tiny camera; the picture only a tad unsharp, while the sound is excellent. So you don't need anything fancy, especially not for this kind of video collage.

Just for the record, I might change the winning items a bit. According to stuff I work on, they will be:

2. Meg Giry's Masquerade hat (halfway done, if I get the veil right it'll also be a cool item)

Suggestions to what the first price for an eventual male winner could be? I thought of the Man/Woman hat and mask, but I would not make the wig and then it might look less cool. Then I thought of Red Death's plumed hat, but it would be expensive to make PLUS a devil to ship. So... Ideas?

You don't need a costume at all. You can do rap Masquerade in street clothes, or gather a flash mob in everyday clothes. Or buy a silly tiara and sing out loud. Creativity is the goal, not a music video RUG could have made themselves.

In that case I'm a threat to put on one of my Amy Pond costumes and use my sonic screwdriver as a microphone.

The Phantom has a bunch of interesting ensemble pieces. The cape would be nice to see you tackle!

Oh, I agree, and it's an item I'd love to make, but I think it'll be a bit expensive and time consuming for this purpose. Trying to stick to smaller items, like hats and "jewelry".

I got the first contribution today. Without revealing too much, it's a fantastic beatbox entry. Loving it! Keep it coming, people. This'll be so much fun.

Feel free to send pictures of an eventual film session too. And bloopers and mishaps. We love those.

Sorry for bugging y'all with this... But I just wanted to say that some rather awesome videos for the Masquerade sing-along video has ticked in:

*A beatbox video for much of the instrumental part in the middle
*The Hula girl!!
*"...but who cam name the face?" (a picture contribution, but a cool one)
*"....to a prosperous year, to the new chandelier" (quirky, in a good way...)
*Two Phantoms dancing in an elevator (I laughed out loud)
*And we have our "Red Death"!!

But seriously, there is still much space left, and there are so many I would love to see contribute. Remember, you don't need a costume to join. All you need is some Phantom love, a camera, and maybe an amusing idea. As the picture contribution above works so well, I'm also open for more pictures. Feel free to suggest it, anyway. This video is mostly about phans getting together to share our love for Phantom, and to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the musical. Join!

Ooh, I want to do this. But without access to my costumes, I feel so sad. I know you don't need a costume, but it seems ironic not to have them now.

Anyway, I agree with letting us know what lines are still needed. How much do you still have left to go?

That's a really a good idea. I have something in mind for "Think of it/a secret engagement/Look, your future bride", but I need to find some props and figure out if my camera takes decent quality video. And feel free to lay professional audio on top since I don't sing.

Not sure my regular email acts as it should. I've had issues with it this last week, when people have tried to send large attachments.

I have received no new entries this last month. By the speed of it, with one week left of the deadline, it seems I have to cancel the whole thing. There just aren't enough entries to make a whole video. Very bummed about this.

Anyone who are contributing for sure?

Not good I have something in mind, but just haven't had time to film it (and it's only one line, so it won't help much).

I have some ideas and I would like to contribute. It's just a matter of trying to find the time. I was going to try tomorrow, providing I have the opportunity.

At the moment, only thing doable for me would be playing Masquerade on my reed organ.
