Funny or Cute backstage stories, meeting with the stars etc

Post  ladygodiva on Fri Jun 04, 2010 12:17 pm

I remember when in the London production when Dave Willets was the Phantom he would have fans that had written him come to the dressing room and have tea with him, (I was never lucky enough to do that but I do know several fans that were lucky) most of my friends that got to see Dave said that he was amiable and really seemed like he was a fan of theirs, He seemed to really apprciate them.

I do have a cute story about Meeting Michael Crawford, I was in line backstage waiting for him with about 60 others, when he came out we cheered and while I was waiting in the cue to be next, I was chatting with another fan, well my turn had come and Michael said, come a long darling if you want, I said, DO I, and he just smiled, those dimples, and up close Michael had freckels which made him even cuter,..

And in New York, while waiting at the backstage door, Sarah Brightman came out before Micheal Crawford, and I cheered, (most people were waiting for MC, most of us were wearing MC t-shirts or buttons, Sarah said obviously most of you are here for Micheal, I laughed and said that I am waiting for you as well, she sweetly signed my authograph book, and she was very nice to a little girl.

I do love your stories, ladygodiva! Very Happy Picturing fans having tea with Dave Willetts amuses me...

I've been backstage 4 times I think. Twice in London, once in Vegas and once in Copenhagen.

The first time I went in London I was accompanying a friend who somehow had arranged to meet Ramin Karimloo in his dressing room back when he was playing Raoul. So I assume it must be same room that all the Raouls have used? Quite a spacious room. There was a cardboard cut-out of the Masquerade scene and his sofa had a big Canadian flag on it. I remember being somewhat disturbed/amused by the fanmail on his notice board; so many of them bizarrely were covered in lipstick kiss marks... Shocked He talked quite a bit about how he loved the Toronto production and tried to assure me that Colm was amazing live (of which I now have no doubt, but I was sceptical because at the time I didn't appreciate his performance on the OCC as I do now).

Second time was thanks to a friend who's part of the ballet chorus; basically got to go on stage in between a matinée and evening performance. The matinée had just ended so they were setting up the auction scene ready for the evening show. Touched the chandelier, went into Christine's 'Angel of Music' dressing room, saw how the candelabras work etc etc. That was truly surreal for me.

Similar tour in Vegas thanks to the lovely Brianne Kelly Morgan (thanks!). Very Happy

As for Copenhagen, ah, that made me laugh...eh, operafantomet? operafantomet and I pretty much blagued our way backstage by giving the impression we knew Tomas Ambt Kofod, the best Raoul I've seen to date. Found our way to the men's floor and met him and Flemming Enevold (the Phantom). I regret not getting a picture taken or getting Tomas (!) to sign my programme, oh well... Copenhagen was quite nice backstage I thought...by comparison Her Majesty's in London isn't as clean or as well looked after!

I don't always stage door and tend to avoid it unless there's a specific performer that I want to meet for some reason. When I have done, I must give major kudos to Richard Halton, Gina Beck, John Owen-Jones and Stephen John Davis for giving so much of their time -- not the norm in the West End! Rosie Ashe also gave a lot of her time to me when I met her at Mary Poppins.

My chance encounter with Lord Lloyd-Webber was not a great success. It involved a flustered him, an embarrassed me and a pile of Love Never Dies flyers. silent I had a much better experience chatting to Richard Stilgoe and Charles Hart on the 20th anniversary night in London. Both were extremely friendly.

When I met Kim Stengel at the stage door this year while wearing my Carlotta costume, she said, "I used to have a waist that size!" She also said I clearly had good taste for liking Carlotta and examined my costume for accuracy. Smile And indeed, she was very friendly and funny in general, and I appreciated that she took the time to talk to me, especially since I probably looked like a goof!

After the show in East Lansing I made my way down to the stage door. When I first arrived I couldn't believe who I saw, Kelly Jeanne Grant! She was just arriving to get ready for the evening performance, I saw her last September. I ran up and said, "Oh my gosh, Kelly? I'm Callie! I saw you in Detroit and you sent me an autograph picture!" She instantly remembered me, hugged me, and said it was great to finally meet me in person! We talked for a bit then Sean walked by and I stopped him. They were both so sweet. Then I met Paloma, who was also so sweet. Then I met Dallyn Vail Bayles who was the Phantom understudy. He was so nice. I even got a Music Of The Night pose, picture with him! Razz Then Trista came out, I said " Trista!", and dropped my pen right at her feet! lol She said, "Are you the one who came all the way from Detroit, Kelly just told me!"

I got pictures and autographs from each of them. They are all so kind. Very Happy

Scorp, not sure about it being the same room all Raoul's have used but perhaps? I know Alex and Simon have definitely had the same dressing room it's quite narrow and long with a shower on the right hand side, it is one of the first dressing rooms you come to after taking the stairs if that helps any.

Even though I have been backstage I don't have any great or amusing stories to tell which sounds distinctly boring. I always find it an odd place to be as dressing rooms are always very personal places to the individual and I think they seem to just scream of that person. Even when thinking about my home there isn't one room that just screams me, I'd love to have a place like that.

Anyway, great topic, feel I've rambled a bit but I love reading these.

I have... a few? The most recent is only semi-Phantom related, but it made me so happy I'll relate it anyway--I went to a Three Phantoms in Concert performance in Columbus, Georgia last year (if you ever get the chance to see one, do it, it's amazing) and despite having not met for eight years, Ted Keegan still remembered me. I don't think he remembered my name, but he remembered my face without any prompting, and that's what counts to me. Very Happy

When I first met Ted, I was so nervous I just blurted "Hi, I run a website on you" and then forgot to let go of his hand after shaking it.

David DeWitt was kind enough to add me and my best friend to a backstage tour he was giving, just so the security lady at the stage door wouldn't kick us back outside into the rain. And on one of his last performances, when I stood up for him during the curtain call he smiled and tipped his hat at me, which made me want to explode with happiness. bounce

I also got to see some of the cast members congregating for a trip to a bar on Halloween. I think William Patrick Dunne was dressed as Puck from A Midsummer Night's Dream--whatever he was, I remember he looked amazing. And one of the dancers was Titania and had lights in her hair, and her costume managed to keep her entire body covered while somehow still being pornographic, which I couldn't stop laughing at. Smile

And I'm also disappointed that Facebook put the kibosh on Scrabbulous, because I never got to beat Michael McCoy at it. Sad (That man is a WORD DEMON.)

Hahaha! I still claim we actually never lied. We walked in with an "I belong here" face, mumbled "Tomas" and just went upstairs. But I wasn't as brave when I remembered we had to walk into the men's dressing rooms uninvited, not too long after the second performance. Y'know, the showers are the in the first room inside that corridor... I've met many towel dressed cast members in those halls. Laughing

But what a fun evening that was. I love you

Funny or Cute Backstage Stories

Post  ladygodiva on Tue Jun 29, 2010 11:21 pm

Here is another cute story about Colm, the first year of the Toronto Phantom, there was a phans Gathering, a group of Colm Phans gathered and got to meet him backstage, He personally gave a tour, spent time with the phans signing autographs, posing for pictures, chatting, toward the end as a way of saying thanks to his fans, he supplied Champaign and Carrot Cake, A girl who just turned 16 asked for a kiss (Colm said as long as it is your birthday, kissed her, (A lot of ladies said me next Colm it is my birthday as well.)

At another phan party a woman in her 70's asked Colm for a kiss, he said pucker up, she almost pounced on him, kissing him full on the mouth , he just laughed and enjoyed it.

Funny or Cute backstage

Post  ladygodiva on Thu Jul 01, 2010 12:12 am

ML6, I love your reactions,

If you can stand to hear more cute stories about Colm, here is one. when Colm and Frances Ruffel (I know that I am mis-spelling her name (Eponine) came to NY for Les Miserables, Frances was like a daughter to Colm and she lived with his large extended familie in NY, (otherwise she would be a precious little orphan) any how, one day a little nieghbor had a crush on Frances, (He was 8 or 9) he would talk to her in the front, one day Colm asked the little bugger if he would marry Frances, and he would have to get his permission.

Last June in London, we walked to Her Majesty's one night, just to get some pictures. We walked by the stage door, on the opposite side of the street. Out of the blue my better half yells "There's Phantom!" I looked up and indeed, he was in his dressing room window, in full makeup (sans the mask) looking out (I did snap a pic buts its ver dark). We immediately saluted him and he saluted as right back! I was SO blown away.

A few days later after the show I was chatting with the adorable Gina Beck (love her!) at the stage door and Scott Davies walks out, stops to look at us and says "You saluted me right here a few days back!" I was even more blown away! Very Happy
