Phantom up for an(other) award...vote!
No idea why they've made this award, sounds like it's just an advert for the people sponsoring it...but anyway, no harm in Phantom getting another award! The London production's up for the Best West End Show Award in the 2010 WOS Awards, which are always voted by the public.
Problem is that Phantom's current standing isn't very good! It's only got 7% of the vote at the moment...Wicked's got 3 times as many votes! You can see the current standings here: http://www.whatsonstage.com/surveys/stats.php?sid=29&st=a&vw=q465
This calls for some fan action methinks. Go to http://awards.whatsonstage.com to vote. Not sure if they restrict their votes to UK people or not but worth a try. The section for voting for Phantom is the penultimate one. Note that you don't have to vote in all the other categories if you don't want to.

Oh dear...
OK, I know it got good reviews and I've not seen it so I can't really judge it, but I think it's scandalous that a jukebox musical (Jersey Boys) has more votes than Phantom! Sort it out!

Re: Phantom up for an(other) award...vote!
Maybe if Phantom had more insane fans it would do better?
Okay that was a sweeping generalisation, I have friends who are Jersey Boys fans and they definitely aren't insane but there IS a lot of fans who act rather "questionably" when they attend Jersey Boys.
Also, Wicked, enough said on that one. Although as with Jersey Boys not ALL Wicked fans are like that either. There's just a lot of them that are.

Where are those teenybopper fan girls the 2004 movie generated when you need them?
Yeah, given the stories I've heard about the Wicked fans, Phantom may not stand a chance. Wicked wasn't in existence the last time Phantom won an award in 2002.
Maybe we can hope to beat at least Les Mis?
(Oh, and if people really want to vote in other categories, may I highly recommend voting for anything concerning A Streetcar Named Desire, Sunset Blvd and either of the two Hamlets, all of which were probably the highlights of my theatrical year ).
Re: Phantom up for an(other) award...vote!
Personally I think Wicked is tremendously overrated - or maybe I've become jaded from about four years of undergrad during which all the wanna-be drama girls burst out into 'Popular' and 'Defying Gravity' morning, noon, and night on campus.
Gee, is this what it was like in the 80's when Phantom and Les Miz first appeared on the scene?
Voted.

Exaclty. There must be SOME reason for their existence, right?Scorp wrote:Where are those teenybopper fan girls the 2004 movie generated when you need them?
We need the equivalent of Stephen Colbert's Colbert Nation. They got a bridge in Hungary and part of the International Space Station named after him (okay, so he got disqualified from the former and the latter was downgraded to a piece of exercise equipment, but he won the write-in vote both times).

Re: Phantom up for an(other) award...vote!
OK, instead of getting on with my work, I've just found out how to manipulate the voting completely (and unfairly)... I feel a bit bad for practising it though...so am not sure whether to share or if this breaks any rules? Plus for it to work you need to be as easily prone to procrastination as I am and spare a few minutes.
Re: Phantom up for an(other) award...vote!
Voted! And yes, POTO should definitely beat "Jersey Boys"...
Re: Phantom up for an(other) award...vote!
I just voted. Are you allowed to vote more than once?

I'm curious why Patrick Stewart & Edward Bennett were both nominated for the RSC Hamlet, but not David Tennant. It's a conspicuous absence.

Re: Phantom up for an(other) award...vote!
I assume that's because Tennant didn't do the role long enough in the London stretch of the run to qualify for an Olivier Award, and therefore WOS is likely to be using similar criteria.
I never saw Ed Bennett in the role, but Tennant was formidable and overall a better Hamlet than Jude Law, even though I still thought that Law put in a great performance. Patrick Stewart was far better as Claudius than Kevin R. McNally was in the Donmar production, I thought.

Re: Phantom up for an(other) award...vote!
I'm surprised to see that 'Jersey Boys' is such a big contender. It is new, comparatively, but I didn't find it to be that tremendously brilliant of a production. It's been running in Toronto for a few years now, and Jeff and I have been to see it once. It seems fairly popular with the tourist, but I know nothing of a 'fangirl' type of contingent. Does this exist for the West End production? Maybe it's just me, but I really didn't get the vibe from it when seeing it in Toronto - enjoyable though it was.
And I agree that Wicked is rather over rated. Again, I enjoyed it but I was a bit disappointed after all the hype. It just didn't move me the way Phantom does, from start to finish. And I also wonder, as we saw the tour in Toronto, for those who've seen the sit down productions - that dragon thing on the proscenium?? Does it ever do anything, other than the eyes lighting up?? It didn't really do anything on the tour, and I really hate it when big, exciting looking set pieces are total let downs that do nothing!! Argh! I think that's the theatre major in me...
And I voted - POTO still in 7th... ::sigh::

The Jersey Boys fangirl contigent in the West End is terrifying. I heard one night someone was flashing the stage from the dress circle.
And in London anyway in Wicked the Dragon's eyes light up and the neck moves around a bit, not very impressive though...

The head moves about on Broadway and in London. I think it's a reference to that clock thing (I've momentarily forgotten what it's called) that Elphaba is born in in the novel. Agreed that Wicked the musical is massively overrated, but interesting I suppose to see a show attain that level of success and fan hysteria in this age...sort of gives you an idea into what Phantom mania was like when it opened on Broadway in '88.
And here's a copy-and-paste from the London thread:
Everyone needs to pull their socks up and get voting for Phantom if they haven't already -- see question 25 at http://awards.whatsonstage.com ! This is dreadful, I'm perfectly happy for War Horse to win (especially over something like Wicked) but I am NOT going to let We Will Rock You of all things beat Phantom! At the moment WWRY is actually doing better than PotO! Make sure you vote!
Re: Phantom up for an(other) award...vote!
OK, we're officially the second last, LOL. We are only beating Mamma Mia. Two jukebox musicals are beating Phantom. This will not do. For the love of Erik, vote if you haven't done so already! (If you have already voted, don't bother voting again unless it's from a different computer).
Oh well. I hope at least War Horse manages to beat Wicked...

Re: Phantom up for an(other) award...vote!
I agree with what others have said - people will vote for more recent stuff, not because they are better, but because they are newer...
Re: Phantom up for an(other) award...vote!
Yeah tis inevitable...though if Les Mis can beat WWRY I don't see why Phantom can't...
The RSC Hamlet with Patrick Stewart and David Tennant was televised yesterday...brought back good memories!
P.S. Operafantomet -- did you get my email? I can't tell if it went through or not. :-\

Re: Phantom up for an(other) award...vote!
Phantom is probably doing so bad because in general the people that visit the WOS boards don't seem to be full of love for Phantom and these will in the main be the people probably voting.

Re: Phantom up for an(other) award...vote!
OK, Phantom's obviously lost that award to Wicked BUT...............we could win another and much more prestigious one!
Ladies and Gentleman, the London production of Phantom could win its THIRD Olivier Award! (These are basically the London equivalent of the Tonys...the most prestigious prize to win in UK theatre).
In 2010, the Laurence Olivier Awards is creating an exciting new award, the Audience Award, giving theatregoing audiences the chance to crown their favourite long-running London show.
The last and only previous time this was done was in 2002, and guess which show won thanks to all of us fans voting? Yep, Phantom! Let London know that Phantom is still very much loved and is loved even more so than pop-voiced witches with a scary teenage fanbase!
Our first goal is for Phantom to get a nomination, and THEN for it to win.
So vote for it to get its nomination here (you can always vote using multiple email addresses if you feel like it by the looks of it): VOTE NOW, VOTE NOW AND LEAVE ME (then come back)! <- click link!

Re: Phantom up for an(other) award...vote!
The Wicked fandom have been informed they could be nominated for an Olivier... therefore we really need to get as many people as possible to nominate Phantom!

Oh crap. I will not be impressed if Wicked wins the Olivier. Did it even win the Olivier when it opened? I know it lost the Tony to Avenue Q, but can't remember what happened at the Larrys and can't be bothered to look it up.
Reminder of global importance that it's your last chance now to help Phantom get nominated! You have until only 1st February (i.e. Monday). Here's the link: http://bit.ly/6fip91
Also, not that Phantom will win this, but it's also your last few days to vote for it at the WOS Awards: http://bit.ly/6Fbabm
Re: Phantom up for an(other) award...vote!
The posters for Wicked don't mention an Olivier (from memory I tend to not pay attention to them) therefore I'd assume they didn't get one when it opened.
It may be sad but I frequent (just to read) a hardcore Wicked and a pretty hardcore Les Mis forum just to see what is going on in other shows and when I saw the hardcore Wicked forum (with a lot of members) had a topic about the Oliviers I knew I had to spread the word that they were aware!

So in this dark dark night when we all (or most of us) listened to the samples of Love Never Dies I am pleased to say it is official. Phantom is nominated for an Oliver.
